WASHINGTON – Students beware: The summer vacation you just enjoyed could be sharply curtailed if President Barack Obama gets his way.
Obama says American kids spend too little time in school, putting them at a disadvantage with other students around the globe.
"Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas," the president said earlier this year. "Not with Malia and Sasha, not in my family, and probably not in yours. But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom."
The president, who has a sixth-grader and a third-grader, wants schools to add time to classes, to stay open late and to let kids in on weekends so they have a safe place to go.
"Our school calendar is based upon the agrarian economy and not too many of our kids are working the fields today," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a recent interview with The Associated Press.
Fifth-grader Nakany Camara is of two minds. She likes the four-week summer program at her school, Brookhaven Elementary School in Rockville, Md. Nakany enjoys seeing her friends there and thinks summer school helped boost her grades from two Cs to the honor roll.
But she doesn't want a longer school day. "I would walk straight out the door," she said.

Many nations in Europe have long summer vacations. It is what takes place in the classroom that determines how good an education a kid will get. If the kid is stuck in an American classroom a few weeks longer each year I doubt it will do them any good.
More time with teachers teach 0bama songs > more time with parents who undo the propaganda filling their child’s head.
Makes perfect sense when one indoctrinates rather than educates.

More time to practice hymns of praise to the Messiah BHO. Parents ought to be taking their children out of public schools, instead of letting the Left incarcerate children for an ever-larger portion of their childhood.
One more reason to home school and find ways to reduce our property taxes. Any ideas?

The more time the inmates spend in government schools, the more we will get what government schools have always given us.
Here are a few more ideas. Why not do away with lunch? They can eat during class. How about doing away with restrooms and attaching portable toilets to the desks? They’ll get plenty of class time that way.
Is this about education? Nope. This is about helping the teacher unions get more pay. If this was about education then Obama would realize spending more time in dysfunctional schools won’t change a thing.

This is another union pay off.
It’s NOT the QUANTITY of time the kids spend milling around in these indoctrination centers. It’s the QUALITY and RELEVANCE of the instruction they DO get. The average student spends 2 to 3 hours actually learning things about how the world works, history, language. What are they getting the other 4 or 5 hours?
Why, they’re learning to LOVE THE STATE AND IT’S FUNCTIONARIES.

I believe that a past Japanese PM pointed out that American education is on par or better than anyone else’s in the world, if you remove “urban” schools from the equation.
This guy could render the stomach pump an antique.
Teacher formation and curriculum need to be addressed FIRST. Then STANDARDS, which students MUST achieve, should be second.
The most important prerequisite of any of this: Remove all affiliation with the NEA.
