Whole Foods Haters Use Flash Mob Tactic
NBC Bay Area ^ | 9/27/09 | LORI PREUITT

Whole Foods may seem like an unlikely target of liberals, but it is one of the current cause-celebs round these parts.

Ever since the grocery store's CEO wrote a Wall Street Journal editorial that opposed President Barack Obama's health care reform bill, they have tried everything to get back at one John Mackey.

If you've been to a Whole Foods lately you can attest to the fact that the call for a boycott isn't working. The parking lots remain packed and the lines are still long. This weekend in Oakland people who believe health care is a right tried a new and quite entertaining tactic that used a "flash mob-like" feature.

Protesters picked a store in Oakland, a song and a group of clumsy singer/dancers to pull it off.

They walked in the store separately, band members and all, and spread out amongst the aisles. After pretending to shop for a few minutes, the mob made their way to the one spot in the store that had room for a dancing number. They all gathered right there in front of the refrigerated guac and salsa, singing their hearts out to the tune of Tony Basil's "Hey Mickey."

A bewildered security guard had only his cell phone to fight. After quickly dialing, the poor guy just had to take it. The group got off not one, but two reditions of their protest song before going outside for more singing on the sidewalk.

"We believe that every human being has a right to health care, and most Americans agree. But conservatives have dominated this debate because they're willing to be loud. So it's time for us to make some noise of our own, and stand up for health care that we can afford even if we're not CEOs like Mackey," Sarah Norr said.

They said they were inspired by their conservative counterparts who have been dramatizing the health care debate.

Noone was arrested.

If these guys think this will win them converts in the public they are delusional.

If I saw this happen I would gather up all the customers I could and point at the “singers” while laughing hysterically.

Self-centered brats hate to be humiliated in public.

Frankly, I think we should take your thoughts and turn them to use against this healthcare/insurance scam.

The argument goes something like this:
IF you believe that healthcare is a right, and you believe that taxes should be utilized to ensure that everyone in The United States can afford to exercise that right, THEN you must also concede — because it is explicitly stated in the Constitution, whereas healthcare is NOT — that tax money should also be utilized to ensure that everyone in the United States can afford to exercise their right to keep and bear arms. FURTHERMORE, you must concede that tax money should also be utilized to ensure that everyone in the United States can afford to access any and every other right guaranteed under the Constitution; whether expressly enumerated or implied.

Either taxation is a legitimate means of funding access to EVERY Constitutional right, or it is not a legitimate means of funding access to ANY of them. If you object to taxes being used to fund access to even ONE right, then you MUST object to taxes being used to fund access to EVERY other right, as well.

One cannot argue it both ways, yet retain a valid claim to sanity.

“every human being has a right to health care..”

So who’s going to be forced to provide it?

The only cure for “Flash Mob Tactics” is “Flash Bang Tactics”!

I gotta say that the first thing I thought when I saw the WFMI ceo come out with his comments (his very real legal right to make, btw), was that his publicly-traded co. could get some backlash over it, both from the sheep and indirectly from fedgov. It is any subtle harassment by fedgov that should be the greater concern.

Your “right” to health care ends where my wallet begins.

I didn't' use to shop at Whole Foods because I thought their prices were way too high. The place is often called Whole Paycheck. I also think that this Organic Foods thing is about the third or forth biggest Fraud going on today. There's no credible evidence that Organic Food is any better for you than conventional food.

However since the Mackey article in WSJ I've shopped at Whole Foods at least 6 times. I thought Mackey was right on target about Medical Savings Accounts. Anyway Whole Foods has excellent Breads that are priced about the same as the other supermarkets. They have very good quality produce and some of it is competitively priced. I didn't purchase as much as I usually would at my regular Supermarket but I bought as much as I could find that was competitive in price and quality. I didn't see any protesters when I was at Whole Foods. I was hoping to. I was going to tell them that I never use to shop at Whole Foods but after seeing the protests I decided to shop there often. I just love getting into the faces of liberal self-rightous people. Just love it.

“believe health care is a right”

I want a service and I want you to pay for it.

They all gathered right there in front of the refrigerated guac and salsa, singing their hearts out to the tune of Tony Basil's "Hey Mickey."

This probably sounds innocuous to a lot of people. But if they think they can get away with this, they might come back and start singing Avril Lavigne's "I Don't Like Your Girlfriend".
