Trees may cause global warming.

"A team of researchers from the US, Denmark and New Zealand have discovered a process through which a prevalent biogenic nonmethane hydrocarbon compound emitted by trees—isoprene—forms atmospheric particulate matter (i.e., secondary organic aerosol). The results are published in the 7 August issue of the journal Science.

Aerosols impact human health, due to their ability to penetrate deep into lungs, and impact Earth’s climate through the scattering and absorption of solar radiation and through serving as the nuclei on which clouds form, noted co-author Prof. John Seinfeld from Caltech. “So it is important to know where particles come from.”

Emissions of nonmethane hydrocarbon compounds to the atmosphere from the biosphere exceed those from anthropogenic activity. Isoprene, a five-carbon diene formed naturally in plants and animals and a precursor of ozone, contributes more than 40% of these emissions. Isoprene is emitted by many deciduous trees, with oaks playing the biggest role. Global isoprene emissions from plants are estimated at more than 500 teragrams each year."

Well, I understand that socks cause global warming.

Just think of it: Global warming lurking in your bureau drawer!

So, I guess we have to get rid of our socks now!

Bummer.

Who wrote the following doggerel?

I think that I shall never see
An air polluter like a tree —
A tree whose toxic fumes accost
More atmosphere than car exhaust;
And yet there will be fools like me
Who say that God can make a tree.

That pic reminds of the dungeon “Reaper” tree monsters from Ultima III: Exodus in..1984 on my Commodore64. :P

I had always wondered why killer trees were growing in dungeons!

Actually, global warming is caused by the lack of Pirates. Some here has a chart that can prove that since the decline of pirates, global temps have increased.

Personally, I think it goes back farther to the complete lack of cavemen today. The argument is easy to show, since cavemen ceased to hunt the Mastodon, the earths temp has increased.

Good heavens, hydrocarbon smog! These Green Weenies just discovered why the Blue Ridge Mountains are blue. I could have told them that (or they could have just looked it up in Wikipedia) but then they would not have gotten the fancy research grant.

The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present – and is gravely to be regarded. Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.

Isoprenes include terpenes; yes, he was laughed at; a study done 20 years ago by a Georgia university came to similar conclusions but couldn’t move to the epoxide, HO conclusion due to instrument limitation; all we currently know still suffers from instrument uncertainties along with coverage of observation.

None of this would be a problem at all if there were no humans to see it.

Kind of like waking from a dream where you’re careering downhill and your foot won’t reach the brake...

The answer has always been known. The solution, however, is not as profitable and all the current crap.

Using hemp for CO2 absorption is more efficient than agro-forestry per land use, with greater overall benefits and more land available to absorb significant quantities of atmospheric CO2 levels. Hemp grows in almost any soil type, altitudes and climate without the need for chemical inputs and improves soil structure while also protecting and binding soils and nutrients. Hemp roots tap into deep subsoil nutrients other plants cannot access, as well as destroying nematodes and other soil pests, resulting in improved yields of follow on crops. “Isoprene is emitted by many deciduous trees, with oaks playing the biggest role.”

Isoprene is used to make rubber. So, while on the one hand, inaction risks the re-emergence of global warming, on the other hand, the precipitous deforestation of our planet will result in catastrophic overpopulation.

This crisis requires immediate action by our president, who could appoint a Tree Czar charged with painting the trees white.

Oh this is rich!

I was taught in college just a few years ago that trees are good for the environment because they take out greehouse gases.

This is hilarious.

All ‘carbon offsets’ that have been bought and sold, including those issued by AlGore, are hereby deemed ‘worthless’. ‘Carbon offsets’ that were used to plant trees to offset individual carbon emmissions have now been shown to contribute to ‘global warming’.

All owners of ‘carbon offsets’ are therefore adding to global warming and will soon be required to purchase:

Carbon offset offsets.
