I am haunted by the specter of the people on that overpass during hurricane Katrina. They stood there and waited for help. It never occurred to them to help themselves by walking north. When no help was forthcoming, they began to chant, “We want help. We want help. We want help.” It was very clear to ME that they perceived that the way to get help was to “demonstrate” and demand it—to create a disturbance until someone took notice of them and helped them so they would be silent. It was so similar to a child throwing a tantrum that no imagination was needed to draw the parallel. It was clear that they were going to stand there and scream until “daddy” (government) came along and solved their problem. It never dawned upon them that no one was withholding help, there was simply no help to give. What have the “safety nets” done TO our population, not FOR our population? May God help us. We are clearly incapable of helping ourselves—like a papoose that has been carried to long, we cannot walk.
It is an interesting observation that in shielding our citizens from the consequences of their own actions, we have provided “mercy”—and cheated justice.

In northern michigan we heard that the hurricane was headed for New Orleans TWO DAYS before it did!!! Those people has PLENTY of notice. I didn’t feel too terribly sorry for them. And lets just admit that it was the black population of that city that couldn’t figure out how to take responsibility for their own lives and safety.
If you had had to deal with the “Katricians” like we in Houston had to you would be changing your tune. They were/are absolute animals. Trash, rubbish. I view this as self defense.
The education level of those people was pretty low. That should tell them something. They were incapable of taking care of themselves. Others shouldn’t feel sorry or guilty for what went on.
I remember too, that Bush signed a disaster declaration for that area before Katrina even hit. And Mayor Chococate Nagin was on TV two days before it hit, and then the day before also, urging everyone to get out. It’s very sad that too many didn’t leave in time. Whose fault is that?
I’m still frustrated that Bush was blamed for all the problems of Katrina and the gov’t response to same, when the mayor and governor there were both good Democrats. The liberals succeeded in politicizing a natural disaster. The liberals succeeded in knocking Bush and suggesting that the federal gov’t, not the state and local gov’t, had the supreme responsibility to prepare and rescue people.
Our country was founded on the rights and self reliance of individuals.
You and only you are responsible for your well being.
You got it. And if you need some temporary assistance, which you will pay back, better not have pissed off every relative or friend you have.
The author has never been to New Orleans. There was no way for those people to walk north out of downtown.

I don’t believe the man defended himself or his dedicated staff once; not only did not defend himself, but apologized for things he did not have to..e.g., Niger uranium story.
He did the same thing for whole eight years, never understood it.
I think I will be dead before the truth comes out.
It was on that bridge the networks covered. (wheel chair person dies there?) Dunno where in relation to New Orleans. Could have been outside the city in suburbia at that time.

At that point, my sympathy for "those poor, stranded people" hit rock bottom...

I don’t recall any massive government aid during and after the great Chicago fire, nor the San Francisco earthquake. Folks just picked themselves up, dusted themselves off, and moved on - rebuilding the cities better than they were before.
...But those were the days when capitalism reigned supreme.

The author completely misses the real tragedy, and that is that these people, predominantly blacks, but not exclusively, are socialized by liberals to not be able to make decisions on their own. This socialization has gone on for generations and is rapidly expanding with the illegal immigrants and all the others who are sucking on the government’s teats. The inner city churches and social programs simply compound the problem and indoctrinate the children born into that mess of society. You can’t ask someone to build an airplane if they don’t know anything about engineering and aerodynamics. Likewise you can’t ask these people to fend and think for themselves when they have zero ability to do so. Plus they have zero need to do so because the government is there to take care of them. All of these social programs discourage independence and promote social dependence. This is true in every major city in the country and is not unique to any one place or time. These people are victims of liberalism and they don’t even care because it is easier to go through life being taken care of.

I rememmber seeing a black woman griping because she didn’t like the food they were given after days without. “We want hot food!” she demanded on national Tv.

Katrina was a three-way disaster. The mayor didn't get them out (and they didn't get themselves out), the governor woulnd't let the guard or the rescue teams in, and the cops on the other side of the bridge wouldn't let refugees out after the storm.
Bush took the blame but they did it to themselves. The federal stuff worked. The navy and coast guard were there working it before the wind stopped blowing. FEMA pre-deployed into the area days before the storm. Guard units from neighboring states were called up and ready to be loaned to Louisiana.
Bush's team did their job. This disaster was home grown.
Keep them looking at “Daddy Government” is another way of buying votes!!!!!
