In VA, Republicans Still Above 50% in All 3 Statewide November Contests: Virginia Republicans continue to dominate the statewide contests for Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General in elections today, 09/29/09, five weeks until votes are counted, according to SurveyUSA polling for WDBJ-TV Roanoke and WJLA-TV Washington DC.

In the race for Governor, Republican Bob McDonnell today defeats Democrat Creigh Deeds by 14 points, 55% to 41%. Compared to identical SurveyUSA polls released four and nine weeks ago, little has changed. McDonnell receives majorities from both men and women, young and old, rich and poor, college graduates and those who did not attend college. Deeds leads by 3:1 among African Americans, by 7:1 among Democrats and liberals, and by 14 points among moderates. McDonnell and Deeds tie in Northeastern Virginia; McDonnell leads in the rest of the state.

For Lieutenant Governor, Incumbent Republican Bill Bolling is today elected to a second term, defeating Democrat Jody Wagner, former Treasurer of VA and VA Secretary of Finance, 54% to 41%. Bolling led nine weeks ago by 12, led four weeks ago by 10, leads today by 13. The Republican has momentum in Central VA. The Democrat is making inroads, though still trailing, in Southeast VA.

In the Attorney General contest, Republican state senator Ken Cuccinelli today defeats Democrat state representative Steve Shannon 53% to 42%. The Republican has never polled less than 53%. The Democrat has never polled more than 42%.

Filtering: 1,000 Virginia adults were interviewed by SurveyUSA 09/26/09 through 09/29/09. Of them, 886 were registered to vote. Of them, 631 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the November general election. Incumbent Democratic Governor Tim Kaine is term limited; his seat is open. Incumbent Republican Attorney General Bill Mims was appointed to the seat by the Virginia General Assembly in February 2009, when Bob McDonnell resigned to campaign full-time for Governor, and is not seeking election to the office.

What would be 2-3 critical changes in law that would make VA better over the long haul, despite who holds power?

A former Dem. governor of Virginia refused to endorse Mr. Deeds.

Look at all the endorsements McDonnell’s received and you’ll get the sense that he’s a mainstream business-friendly, no-nonsense law enforcement style Republican.

The Wilder effect?

McDonnell’s African-American vote: 24%
Bolling’s African-American vote: 20%
Cuccinelli’s African-American vote: 18%

That’s correct.

All 100 members of the HOD are up this year (Senate in 2011). We will most defintely hold the majority and could possibly increase the margin.

A former Dem. governor of Virginia refused to endorse Mr. Deeds.

That announcement may be more about former governor Wilder and less about the Deeds/McDonnell race. Wilder doesn't like either one of the candidates' Second Amendment stances plus he likes to be in the limelight.

Sorry, I’ll need your explanation of those numbers. Do the percentages reflect minimal impact, in your view?

Honestly, I don’t know how much of an impact Wilder really had. But those are very good numbers for Republicans.

But those are very good numbers for Republicans.

They sure are. I know McDonnell is popular with the black voters familiar with his tough-on-gangs record according to two black supporters I was talking to at church one Sunday.

The point is that the Dem party set up this phony polling group called PPP.
The entire PPP poll is a Dem media SCAM .
Its a new Dem party strategy , releases these phony PPP polls and let their state media buddies create a phony story around it.
For example, your supposed to think the VA race is real close because of this phony poll but other poll show a much larger lead for the GOP person.
Haven't you noticed how busy the net is with these PPP polls .
There is a reason because the Dem -Obama troll are posting these phony poll results from the PPP !

Add me to your ping list.

I predict Salem voters will choose McDonnell by a wide margin.

In some Salem neighborhoods where I saw Obamma signs, I now see McDonnell and other Republican signs. Even in Roanoke I am seeing more and more McDonnell signs,

Don’t know if this is a trend in other parts of the state.

McDonnell is pulling 24% of the black vote in this poll. It appears to be no fluke, there was a similar result last time SUSA polled.

Similarly, Bolling and Cucinelli get 18-20%. IOW, about twice the level of support we typically see.

The national GOP needs to figure out what Virginia Republicans are doing to break the RAT stranglehold on the black vote.

What would be 2-3 critical changes in law that would make VA better over the long haul, despite who holds power?

  1. Ceding Arlington back to DC.

  2. Changing the election laws such that a multi-year residency is required before voting in Virginia state or local elections.

I’d like to see this governor poll in detail, I know Deeds was seeing improvement after the college thesis issue. According to this, everything is right back where it was before that errupted, which I find hard to believe.

Larry Sabato deson’t believe the Survey USA poll.

@LarrySabato I don’t buy the +14 McDonnell lead in SurveyUSA poll—too wide. PPP poll of McDonnell +5 may not have caught the taxes/Wilder bounce 4 GOP. 9/30 11:14 A.M. -
