Even a federal judge can wind up having problems with lenders and banks these days.
A small Northern California community bank this week sued San Jose U.S. District Judge James Ware in Santa Clara County Superior Court, accusing him of failing to make payments on an $80,000 boat he purchased nine years ago. The lawsuit, filed by Butte Community Bank, alleges that Ware owes more than $58,000 and the bank is seeking a court order to seize the boat.
So now the veteran federal judge finds himself facing the prospect of being a civil defendant in a courtroom instead of running one.
...
The 62-year-old Ware is a 1990 appointee of former President George H.W. Bush, one of three full-time federal judges in the San Jose courthouse. Once considered a rising star in the California judiciary, Ware encountered major controversy in 1997, when his nomination to a federal appeals court collapsed after it was revealed he fabricated a story about being the brother of a young boy shot and killed by racists in Alabama during the 1960 civil rights movement.
Ware had appropriated another James Ware's story, and was forced to recant his account. He was reprimanded by a federal disciplinary panel, but resumed his work on the San Jose bench.

That’s quite a mortgage on a boat.
Silly bank... Judges are above the law!
The judge will just get on of his buddies to reduce the payment on the boat, since it is obvious that the poor judge was taken advantage of. Say one dollar a month until it is paid for?
Recanting must be like a "Kings X" because the liar stayed on the bench.
A large hole in the water you throw money into.
isnt 9 years past the time allowed to collect a debt? Unless he’s made a payment since then I think its not recoverable?
Impeachment is the only way to remove a Federal Judge.
Doesn't appear that he's been paying much more than that to begin with.
$200/month for 9 years. Do banks do 30 year loans for boats?
I don’t think his boat is worth what he paid for it, but he could have paid much much more.
I know it’s a lifetime appointment so that must not be an impeachable offense?
They probably do 30 years, I know they do 20 years..... mine was 15 years.
It’s always too much, a waste of money, a dumb decision, irresponsible, ultimately upside down, but some nut cases are still willing to spend the money. ; >)
Also known as “Break Out Another Thousand”. Been there, done that!
Maybe he thought it was a loan-loan.
I know we are in tough economic times, but not for judges. They make like $150k/year, and their pay is adjusted for inflation every year. If he fell behind on payments, it’s only because he screwed up his own budget.
In Wyoming, it is 10 years.
That may be the reason the bank is moving now.
