California to investigate ACORN videos
LA Times ^ | Oct. 1, 2009 | By Eric Bailey

Reporting from Sacramento - Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown has launched an investigation into the brouhaha over videotapes of a conservative group's sting operation against ACORN, the community organizing group credited with helping push Barack Obama to the presidency.

Brown's office plans to look into circumstances surrounding both the making of the videos and any possible misdeeds by ACORN employees in California caught on tape.

In what has become a staple of TV and radio talk shows in recent weeks, ACORN workers in several states were shown allegedly offering advice on tax evasion, human smuggling and child prostitution. Undercover videotapes, shot surreptitiously by a pair posing as a pimp and prostitute, were shot of ACORN workers in Maryland, California, New York and Washington, D.C.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger asked Brown to investigate the videos in a letter two weeks ago. Chief Deputy Atty. Gen. James M. Humes replied that an investigation has been opened "of both ACORN and the circumstances under which ACORN employees were videotaped."

It is illegal under state law to tape someone without his or her permission.

"We're going to look at the tapes, we're going to follow the facts without fear or favor, and we're going to see where it takes us," said Scott Gerber, a Brown spokesman.

Schwarzenegger said in a statement that he is "outraged and deeply concerned by these allegations," which include videotapes released of alleged misdeeds at ACORN offices in San Bernardino and San Diego counties.

"If these reports are true," the governor said, "they warrant prosecution under the fullest extent of the law."

They have to say that else face big time lawsuits, which they would lose.

What do they mean allegedly? The ACORN staff clearly gave the assistance the undercover actors asked for without coercion.

Read something somewhere recently that said Al Franken has shady ties to ACORN.

GD liars and traitors...

It was Schwarzenegger's government, working in concert with the corrupt federal government that is using OUR tax dollars to fund, support and subsidize these criminal organizations.

These comments are outrageous...

The government is confiscating trillions of our tax dollars...Where in hell is the government over-site?

Oh that's right, the government over-site committee is humping the lobbyist call girls down the street at the local hotel.

Are these criminal organizations supplying their drugs too?

Say what you will about Schwarzenegger...I have no love for him, and he is toast anyway, as a lame duck.

However, Jerry Brown, as moonbeam as he may be, is not a patsy. As lib, left and screwy as he is or may seem to be, my personal opinion, and probably mine only, is that he is a fairly straight arrow.

Is is it really illegal to video tape people without their consent in a meeting room and front room of a private business? Some govt offices and property are specifically covered and you can’t video them. I’m sure you can sue the photogs for the tort of invasion of privacy but that’s a civil action not a criminal one. What’s the legal basis of the reporters claim that it’s illegal? Also are all undercover TV reporters and their producers and network anchors (local and national) also going to be charged for the same action that these two did? What about print and radio reporters who use hidden tape recorders? Has 60 Minutes ever run undercover filming here in Ca? What about ABC’s To Catch a Preditor?

But our brain dead ass kissing AG is trying to prosecute the whistle blower?!

That's not what the assistant AG stated. He said that they were also investigating the circumstances of the video recording, which is a very careful way of saying nothing.

Look, despite his Moonbeam reputation, Jerry Brown is a smart politician with a lot of experience under his belt. He's not an idiot like the guy in Maryland. I guarantee you that Brown is neither going to side with a discredited ACORN nor go after the pair who executed a brilliant sting.

Anyway, it's all just political posturing by both Arnold and Jerry. They both love publicity, and are taking the opportunity to garner some attention.
