NYT: For Obama, An Unsuccessful Campaign ["He Could Not Even Muster The Silver Or Bronze"]

For Obama, An Unsuccessful Campaign

By PETER BAKER October 2, 2009

COPENHAGEN — President Obama not only failed to bring home the gold, he could not even muster the silver or bronze.

A dramatic 20-hour mission across the ocean to persuade the International Olympic Committee to give the 2016 Summer Games to Chicago proved such a miscalculation that his adopted hometown finished fourth of four candidate cities.

Rarely has a president put his credibility on the line on the world stage in such a personal way and been slapped down so sharply in real time. While Chicago may have lost to Rio de Janeiro for all sorts of reasons that had nothing to do with Mr. Obama, the fact that he made himself the face of the city’s bid invariably meant it would be taken as a stinging rejection of its favorite son.

The defeat will be used as a political metaphor and raise painful questions. Why did he invest so much time, taxpayer money and, perhaps most important, presidential prestige in a losing effort? How did he misjudge the potential vote so badly that Chicago evidently was not even in the top tier? What does it say about a leader who may be far more popular abroad than his predecessor yet has trouble converting that esteem into tangible benefits for the United States?

The rejection of Mr. Obama’s plea for Chicago came at a time when he could have used a feel-good victory. After racking up legislative and policy successes in the early months of his presidency, he has entered a phase where progress is more difficult. He has run into turbulence trying to pass health care, climate change and financial regulation legislation, and his poll ratings have slipped notably since spring.

Article reports...

First this:

Given that Mr. Obama flew overnight and made his presentation about 3 a.m. Washington time, Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said it consumed few regular work hours that would have gone to other priorities.

Then this:

Mr. Obama, Michelle Obama, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Ms. Jarrett worked the phones in recent weeks without coming away with a sense of how behind Chicago really was.

The whole damn bunch were playing Dialing for Dullards.

Before leaving Washington, Mrs. Obama made clear how seriously the first couple took the matter, saying “the gloves are off” and they would “take no prisoners.”

That's your Chicago-style First Lady.

Can you imgine Laura Bush, or for that matter, any other First Lady, speaking that way ~ "the gloves are off" ?

I’m beginning to wonder if the push to put B Hussein in the White House may have been very closely tied to getting the Olympics in Chicago all along.

Things that make you go hmmmm....

The man's Presidency has been a series of never-ending fumbles. If it wasn't so serious, it would be downright laughable. No one respects or fears Obumbler.

THis is the only way the NYT is going to detach itself from Obama-—over small issues, one at a time, piecemeal.

What has this goofball ever accomplished on his own?
He got elected to the US Senate by getting his competitor disqualified. His college was paid for by someone else. His media got him elected. He can’t convince the US taxpayer to go along with any of his plans, so he has to include force. He is using unelected and unaccountable czars to get his way, again with the force. He is using the force of the US government to rule, not to govern because he is incapable of actually selling anything. Empty suit big time.

Gee, he was out of leauge with a bunch of olympic organizers. How will he handle himself with a real adversary? I already know the answer to that.

“the trip probably cost taxpayers upwards of 20 mil. “

Does anyone really know what this waste of taxpayers’ money cost? I haven’t seen any estimates. Gotta’ be a lot . . . a lot more than when he and his muslim cronies went on that “scare” flight over Manhattan.

It’s simple. His ego is such and his sycophants fawning enough to convince him that his almighty presence in Copenhagen would seal the deal. But I think he rolled the dice because he figured a win, which of course would surely happen once he blessed Danish soil with his footfall, would help him get his death care reform program (”Hail Obama, He is the One we’ve been waiting for! He brought home the Gold! Let us follow Him in all things! Hail!”) and maybe even more mileage for other stuff he wants, and would cap off the end of the second term he’s probably sure is in the bag, too (just like the Olympics, lol).

Good gawd. Ostammer’s windbaggery alone would be enough to lose the gig for whatever city he was hustling for.

Michelle looks like her usual bitter, snarling, victimized, angry, insulting self in that photo. Yeesh, what a foul kisser she’s got.

Ostammer looks like he’s asleep. Maybe he’s got a mirror hidden down in his jacket cuff and he’s looking at himself.

Well, he basically bragged about what a great effort they gave it, “Sometimes you lose no matter how well you play the game”. Uh, okay. Right. Sure. Great job. Or maybe dissing the U.S. and bragging about me me me me I I I I I isn’t always the sure thing you think it is.

I think if ostammer had just loaded up those styrofoam Greek columns onto Air Force One and then placed them in the chamber where the meeting took place and stood in front of them as he spoke, that would have cinched it for them.

Kick backs, graft, theft, etc. Typical Chicago gangland business as usual. That’s all it was ever about.

Wonder if the FBI tipped the IOC off to some impending arrests in Chicago...IIRC there have been over forty under Daley's command all ready this year.

I hope so. Chicago is a cesspool of crime and corruption. There is no amount of money that could pay me to live there. I spent a month there one winter, saw the sun maybe twice, most depressing month of my life. My car was filthy all the time from the pollution. I’m glad they didn’t get the Olympics. Thrilled they didn’t! They don’t deserve it and it was a way for their thug in chief in the WH to funnel billions of our tax dollars into the coffers of the thugs.

“I wish that we had come back with better news from Copenhagen.”

Everyone already knew and were dancing in the streets everywhere but Chicago. One reaps what one sows!
