Inside Obama's Olympic Stumble

Game over, home team lost: the U.S. won just 18 votes in the first round of IOC voting, and was knocked out in the first round. And suddenly the president was being pummeled by the right for a frivolous use of political capital—especially in the Weekly Standard, which not only blasted Obama for his failure, but anticipated that the mainstream press corps would not take the defeat seriously. “The media is faced with three facts as a result of Obama’s embarrassing failure in Copenhagen. 1) The failure itself. 2) The incompetence. 3) The lack of persuasive ability. There’s nothing ideological about any of these items,” wrote Fred Barnes.

To be fair, I am glad 0bama spent political capital on this. It makes the outcome so much worse politically for him.

Not exactly true. Serious journalists were critical of this fiasco long before he lost the Olympics.

Since it was Titanic’s maiden voyage, Captain Edward Smith was not able to throw blame on the previous captain...

Even before Obama became the Dem nominee, smart people knew the Chicago Olympics was going to be nothing but a graft fest for Mayor Daley and his cronies. I was opposed to Chicago having them from the get go. So was half of Chicago.

I am too. Obambi spent political capital at a time when he and his entire down-ticket need it more than ever. Deeds and Corzine and in fights for their political lives and they firmly attached themselves to the Obambi.

Me thinks that is why congress is trying so hard to ram HC and anything else in before the Nov. elections when the dam cracks and the tide truly turns.

“people knew the Chicago Olympics was going to be nothing but a graft fest”

So now we know what and who a chunk of the “shovel ready” stimulus money was destined for.....how will they get their thieving hands on it now?

I marvel that he still gets credit for eloquence at all. He seems incapable of delivering this thoughts without the aid of a teleprompter, even at the IOC. His pitch to the IOC was one of the most self-centered, narcissistic arguments I’ve ever heard, in any context, from a President. Michelle’s argument that she did it for the kids despite the great personal sacrifice people see in her effort dropped my jaw.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he did in fact have a deal, but his pitch simply turned the IOC off, and they decided to pop his ballooned sense of self-importance.

Why did the bid fail? Because Rahm and Axelrod thought they had bribed enough IOC electors to guarantee victory. Otherwise they would have never allowed the Obamamessiah to go over there. But Copenhagen is not Chicago. There is no honor among thieves and the electors they bribed did not stay “bought”, but instead flipped to the highest bidder.

IOW, they were beat at their own game.

“I’m still in a state of shock. I can’t believe we couldn’t get past the first round. I still thought the (Chicago) bid overall was the best,” said three-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Ambrose “Rowdy” Gaines.

“Maybe there is some hangover from politics, from the last eight years,” Gaines said.

Initially, I thought the only way he's going over there is if its already in the bag. When the results were announced I knew it was his all consuming ego along with the fact that the Chicago machine headed by little dick daley are bigger thieves than the IOC. That being the IOC voted them out straight away when they saw they weren't going to be the ones making the lions share of the kickbacks.
