“As far as the IOC not picking Chicago because of concern for safety...I don’t buy that one bit. Rio is a heavily crime-laden city...worse than Chicago, no doubt. Had to be something else besides a concern for safety.”

Follow the money. Rio had a budget for the Olympics easily 2x that of Chicago. Result a bigger trough for the IOC to feed at.

The "Black House", eh? How chilling.

Perhaps the new administration will unwittingly provide an opportunity to confront black on white racism.

Doesn’t the Blue Line go to O’Hare?!! Yes, but from downtown to O'Hare is relatively safe on the Blue line during the day. It is the section from downtown west towards Oak Park that should be avoided if possible.

ROTFLMAO

How to tell if you are in the bad part of town?

How about
The number of whores on the corner?
Number of “dudes” coming up and asking “what you wanna buy?”
Number of houses with bars over the windows?
(BTW, if you are still alive to see the parts where there are no windows, you are REALLY in the kimchee)
No gas stations or grocery stores and the corner market has plate steel for ‘windows?

I could go on.

WHen I went to go work a contract in Russia, my folks worried.

I told them I was going to Moscow, not someplace dangerous like, say, Miami. ANY city over - say 20K - can get you killed if you are not paying attention.....

My mom was in Brazil for a month. They were robbed in Rio a few times...watch off the wrist...necklace ripped off the neck...and tons and tons of bi-sexual and lesbian women approaching her night and day. She was telling me yesterday that although in beauty and festivities Rio wins hands down over Chicago they both are ridden with crime.

Did you know there is a big active campaign to bring the 2020 Olympics to Birmingham, Alabama? Not kidding. Apparently, the city is willing to quote “give” thousands of acres to developers to build whatever is needed for the events to take place there.

You don’t see that kind of offer being put on the table for major cities like Chicago, NY, Los Angeles.

In my opinion Miami is the best option. Here are my reasons why:

Landshark Stadium - Home of the Dolphins
Marlins new stadium - Opens in 2011
American Airlines Arena - Miami right off the bay
Miami Arena - Built in the 80s but still hosts plenty of events
Bank Atlantic Center - Arena for the Panthers
Lockhart Stadium - FAU Football Stadium
University of Miami - Track and Field Stadium
Ft. Lauderdale Olympic Aquatic Center
Highways - Sawgrass Expressway, 595, 75, Ronald Reagan Turnpike, I-95
Airports - Ft.Lauderdale International Airport, Miami International Airport, Palm Beach International Airport
Tri-Rail - Train the runs from Miami to Palm Beach
Over 600 hotels in 3 counties
Atlantic Ocean, Miami Beach, Ft. Lauderdale Beach
Port Everglades

Why Chicago was even a consideration is beyond me. Miami has a ton to offer and is more welcoming to not only South Americans, but Latin Americans, Canadians, and the vast majority of tourists who love the place to begin with. You hold events in Broward and Dade counties...it costs you very little in tax payer dollars in comparison because you already have the venues built to support it!

Yes, you have to build new facilities and landscape etc...but you would have contracts laid out til 2020!

Chicago’s vitriolic West Side Catholic leader and one time Obama spiritual mentor Father Michael Pfleger ... has,” earlier this year thundered about the hypocrisy of fighting a war in Iraq “when we have innocent children dying on the streets right here at home."

Fr. Pfleger only has to look in the mirror to understand why Chicago has the violence it has. He, and others of his liberal ilk, have been making excuses for this bad behavior for years, bleating about carp like 'root causes of crime' etc. The 'root causes' are simply that these folks know they can get away with the bad things they do, and have pushed the envelope for years, escalating crime as they went.

Unsafe (chiming in from LA) = gang-ridden, hookers on the corners, clumps of chumps looking for ‘something’ to do, dirty and unkempt surroundings, drunks you have to step over lying by doorways, beaters and etc. cars ‘booming’ loud music.

I have taken the train From Michigan to Galesburg Illinois many times, I used to live in Galesburg. Union Station in Chicago is relatively safe, if you stay in the waiting room terminals, I usually go to that sports bar behind the elevators and across the hall to eat, they have good food.

You just have to watch for the panhandlers and people trying to con your money. People usually come up to me giving me some sob story about how they don’t have money and need to get to X, Y and Z. One time a guy tried to sell me a watch, and when I declined he then took out a bag of weed and tried to sell me that, and naturally I also declined. I couldn’t believe the guy had the guts to pull out a bag of weed right there in the waiting room, where there were cops and sniffing dogs coming through periodically.

The state run media would not venture into Chicago during the campaign and do some real reporting. They’d rather lie, decieve, hide, coverup and bury the criminal activities and people who are now running our country.

I’d suggest you take a cab up to State Street where it meets with Rush. Walk 2 blocks up Rush, take a right at Division Street to Lake Shore Drive, then head south to Michigan Avenue, (maybe a right onto Oak Street, back to State) for a very safe, lovely short tour of the uptown part of city.

so how safe is that? Where are all the shootings taking place? We have to change trains there ... I’m for opting to just stay in the station for the two hour layover ------------------------ Hmmmm, good question. Maybe the mayors office or the national guard armory?

Yes, it should and I can say the same for Detroit. With that being said however, I refuse to go into downtown Detroit for sporting events. The traffic is awful and the crowds are big.

My sister has season tickets to the Red Wings and she doesn't even ask me to attend if there are tickets available because she knows I will turn them down.

I was just given two tickets by my niece and her husband for the Oct. 10 game against the Washington Capitals for my birthday. Face value: $175.00 ea. for the "Legends Club" section of the arena which is a private lounge for select season ticket holders and includes free buffet dinner throughout the game.

I'll probably give them to my neighbors........

If Chicago is like L.A., then there are places to stay away from and you will be fine. Rio, however, could get you kidnapped and killed from even the good areas.

You are absolutely right. Where civilization is highest you will be safest. Where the rule of law is most respected, you will be safest.

Where corruption abounds and even the police are in for the take, no one will ever protect the innocent.

Decivilization leads to living like animals.
