there have been numerous aftershocks in the 5 range. This is probably the largest since the origional.

Remember that the Richter scale works along factors of 10. A quake that registers a ‘7’ on the the Richter scale is actually 10 times more powerful than a quake that registers a ‘6’and thus 100 times more powerful than a ‘5,’ for example.
So a 5.9 quake is somewhat less than 10% of the strength of the original 7.1? quake. Roughly.

luckily a 5.9 usually won’t generate a tsunami....
Heck, many times a 6.5 doesn’t.

I am a veteran of many earthquakes, including 1994 Northridge (SoCal). We had aftershocks in the 5+ range for a few weeks after the main event. Very likely, your 5.9 is an aftershock.

Not sure what they would consider it. You’d have to field that to a geologist, but the radio is the least reliable source of information unless it is flagged as an official report.
Already had one case where the Western Samoa radio has panicked people with false reports.

Is “Survivor” still filming in Samoa? Maybe it will actually be Survivor.
