Air passengers face full body X-rays after suicide bombers hide devices INSIDE their bodies

Travellers to Europe face being treated like drug smugglers as security chiefs are expected to recommend new intrusive security measures.

French anti-terror chiefs are expected to propose the new measures, such as full body X-rays or handing in all electronic devices, after a terrorist tried to kill a Saudi prince with a bomb he had inserted into his body.

Al Qaeda's latest ploy was first pioneered by Abdullah Hassan al Asiri, who blew himself apart in Jeddah in late August in an attack on Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, the Saudi anti-terrorism chief.

The 23-year-old terrorist blew himself into 70 pieces when he detonated the bomb - inserted into his rectum - with a mobile phone.

His body was said to have absorbed some of the impact of the explosion, however, leaving the prince only slightly injured.

However experts claimed such a blast would be catastrophic in the pressurised atmosphere of a passenger jet.

Upon learning of the intrusive security measures this Congressman from Massachusetts was overheard saying, "I'm checking you for hidden explosives Darling. Yippee, this is fun. Let's go to Europe!"

LAX passenger hides objects in his body; bomb squad called

This is disturning on many levels -

LAX passenger hides objects in his body; bomb squad called His plane was diverted but deemed safe.

The Iraqi national, a legal U.S. resident, said he was trying to ease stress. He is turned over to ICE. By Andrew Blankstein, Times Staff Writer March 7, 2007

Authorities called in the bomb squad early Tuesday and diverted a flight to Las Vegas after Los Angeles International Airport security screeners found hidden wires and other objects in a body cavity of a Philadelphia-bound passenger.

Fadhel Al-Maliki, a 35-year-old Iraqi national living in Atlantic City, N.J., had been flagged by security officials at LAX and was undergoing a secondary “selectee screening” when he set off a metal detector.

Al-Maliki, a former security guard, told screeners that he knew what had triggered the alarm and proceeded to remove items from his rectum, including a rock, chewing gum and thin wire filament.

Larry Fetters, federal security director at LAX, said at news conference that Transportation Security Administration officers had become alarmed because Al-Maliki was acting strange but initially refused to identify the items he had hidden.

Concern that the objects might be components for an explosive device led airport authorities to call in the Los Angeles Police Department and FBI bomb technicians as well as a hazardous material team.

A preliminary investigation appeared to rule out a theory that Al-Maliki may have been looking for weaknesses in security or was rehearsing for a terrorist act, federal and local law enforcement authorities said.

During questioning, Al-Maliki said the objects in his rectum were used to alleviate stress, federal law enforcement sources said.

The rock, authorities said he told them, was from another planet. . .

Well... for security agencies the unfortunate truth is that this sort of bomb “placement” does create some difficult challenges. I don’t think any domestic agencies are seriously contemplating this yet, but it’s a [ahem] “hole” in the system nonetheless.

I do wonder if there isn’t just an inherent limitation in the volume of explosives that limits the blast effects. Maybe it would be tough to actually bring down a plane this way? Dunno, but if that one bomber could be sitting right next to his victim and still not inflict a fatal blast, it suggests that it may not be as much of a worry.

It does beg the question though about whether there’s something else that can be done to defeat this. It’ll be used again.

Simple solution: make everyone chug down a bottle of prune juice an hour before the flight, and then wait and see what happens.

Hmm... Yah know... even if nobody on board has exposives up there... I'm thinking this would still not be a good thing.

Security lines will be hours long.

I don't think so. As soon as they start body X-Raying people, you'll lose about 50% of those that are still flying. And that means the terrorists have won.

With the cost of a CT scan at $1000 and the cost of a round trip ticket to NYC at $275, I think the next time I need a CT scan, I’ll fly to NYC and get the scan for free.

They were described as a magnet wrapped with a piece of gum in a napkin and then coiled with wire; and some kind of round, polished stone.

ah, then it wasn't another one of those chewing gum commercials gone terribly wrong! "come on, where is it, give it up! Never!"

no, it's more like "today's science lab is on electromagnetism, children."

I dont care to be exposed to full body x-rays every time I fly. I’m all for security, but this would be very dangerous. Frequent flyers would max their radiation exposure very quickly, and none of us need extra radiation.

They will have to figure out another way.....

Here is a little clue for the airline industry:

Use full body x-rays on all young middle eastern men and leave the Irish grandma’s and Swedish babies alone. OK? You are not going to find bombs hiding in the Norweigan grandmas and the English babies. Stick to full-body x-raying the young middle eastern men and you just might get somewhere.

but, remember, it violates political correctness to do any type of profiling of passengers. We need to prove to Muslim groups, liberals, etc. that we’re not discriminating, and the only way to do that is to search everybody.

Is profiling illegal; does anybody know? I’m puzzled too, to see old women in wheelchairs coming through, being screened so thoroughly. And they are forced to take off their shoes, which for some elderly and disabled is a chore in itself. If security can’t make judgements as to who is likely to be a threat, I don’t know what to tell anybody.
