State Rep. Richard Berry scored an impressive victory Tuesday with an outright win over three-term incumbent Martin Chávez to become Albuquerque's next mayor.
"We had a message that resonated with voters in Albuquerque, and we worked hard," said Berry, a general contractor and two-term Republican state representative who campaigned as a "common-sense" business owner with conservative themes.
...Berry maintained a 5 percentage point or better lead over Chávez throughout the night and finished above the 40 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff election next month. Richard Romero, the third candidate in the race, was trailing, with about 21 percent.
... Berry will become the first Republican mayor elected in Albuquerque since ... 1981, joining a City Council that now holds a 5-to-4 Republican majority. The new mayor takes over Dec. 1 for a four-year term.
The Albuquerque mayoral election is nonpartisan, but party affiliations clearly played a role. Chávez, a moderate if not a conservative Democrat, appeared to split Democratic votes with Romero, a former Democratic state senator.
Berry rounded up Republicans and was competitive even in Democratic-leaning areas. ... Journal pollster Brian Sanderoff said "He performed well in the Northeast Heights and in traditional Chávez areas on the West Side."
Romero said his campaign was an uphill road. "Going against an incumbent machine is always tough," Romero said. ... "(Berry) really surprised a lot of us with strength in some Democratic districts," Romero said.
Albuquerque voters were required to show photo ID for the first time this election, but poll workers across the city reported few problems or complaints.
"I think it's a great idea," said Liz Candelaria, a voter at Manzano High School. "You have a lot of people coming in and you don't know if they're registered voters. ..."

What is that statement going to say if the republicans that are elected are nothing more than general issue socialist RINO’s?
Meh, the GOP winning elections is NOT enough. The folks that are winning those elections need to be “right wing extremists”. If the election cant be won by a hard core “conservative” then the population base there is not who we need to try and support or make happy. Getting socialists elected as republicans does us no good and in fact damages us.
Concentrate on the states and elections where we can get hard core folks elected to state and local offices. Run the same type of folks in the national races as well, but don’t expect that front to be where we will win this war. The goal is now to completely remove every usurpation the fedgov has made upon the rights, freedoms and liberty of the people and the states. IF we FOCUS our fire on THAT objective we will win.

Albuquerque,investigate those “voters” that did not show up and have them prove they are legal to vote. Purge the illegitimate, dead and doubles!
Expecting the moonbats to be voted out in Asheville is like expecting the same in San Francisco. I think if Asheville City were enlarged in size to take in the bulk of Buncombe County and triple its population, you might have a shot. But because it hasn’t annexed anywhere in eons, you just have that relatively small pool of moonbat residents and pols voting for and running everything.
It annexed Biltmore Park a few years ago, and tax rates doubled overnight. The Congressional district is not as liberal as Asheville proper, like you said.
I hope Congress is watching!

I have a theory that the Hispanic vote will not be so mind-numbingly Democrat as the Black vote. Hispanics are pro life, and anti gay marriage. Also, the events in the San Joaquin Valley seems to be sticking to the Obama Administration and the Democrats. The ex-Cuban Hispanic vote in Florida is already Republican.
I always wondered why Asheville has never done more dramatic annexation unlike a lot of other NC cities. It reminds me more of the cities in SC, especially Greenville, which should by all accounts be the largest city in the state if it could annex, but remains like Asheville, only a fraction of the county population. Over here in TN, we in Nashville merged with the county (with the exception of a few tiny satellite towns) back in the early ‘60s. The city was losing population (around 170k in those days), and with the merger, jumped to 400k. Today we’re nearly 650k. Of course, there are enormous downsides to consolidation...
I just read that the city council is now also 5-4 Republican. I hope another river bridge will come out of this!
They tried to pass it in Texas. They were too concerned it would be called “unconstitutional”.
