Coke Didn't Make America Fat
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 10-07-09 | MUHTAR KENT

Americans need more exercise, not another tax.

Obesity is a complex issue, and addressing it is important for all Americans. We at the Coca-Cola company are committed to working with government and health organizations to implement effective solutions to address this problem.

But a number of public-health advocates have already come up with what they think is the solution: heavy taxes on some routine foods and beverages that they have decided are high in calories. The taxes, the advocates acknowledge, are intended to limit consumption of targeted foods and help you to accept the diet that they have determined is best.

I am a fat person. A nutritionist has monitored my eating. You know what? I am not a prodigious eater. In fact, my current food choices are, if anything, bulkier than my old and I have lost 50 pounds “eating more.” It is what you eat, how your body reacts, and how active you are that matter. What works for me is likely not to work for you.

I have a slightly different take on all the “fat” thing.

IMHO political correctness is making Americans fat.

Used to be, one was teased for a myriad of things. Being fat. Acting gay. Failing in class. Losing at dodge-ball. Whining...

Then it became fashionable to suppress the teasing which acted as such a strong social motivator to maintain some basic good habits. It happened that being fat no longer caused one to be teased. A boy wearing a dress became somehow a good thing.

Pass-fail mentalities replaced competition.

Dodge ball itself was eliminated. Never mind winning or losing at the contest.

Whining because an entire poltical party.

THAT is why Americans are getting fat.

And lazy. And immoral. And unproductive. And without skills or motivation.

Because nobody gets teased anymore growing up...

I don’t know, for kids maybe, but I have seen some pretty impressive beerguts bellying up to the local bars around here.

How soon until they demand we only drink light beer?

You have a valid point. The balance a healthy body has, is that the appetite is governed by the number of calories the body believes it needs.

When a person gets obese, this balance is thrown out of kilter; a fat person is ALWAYS hungry. No matter how much he consumes, in an hour his body is telling him that he is hungry. Hunger is not a fun, enjoyable sensation; yet for the fat person, hunger pains are real, and they are far more frequent than in a thin person.

Ask anyone you know who was obese and lost the weight. They will tell you how amazing it is that they can survive on the amount of food they now consume; and that when they were ‘big’ they were hungry all of the time.

It’s a problem that is metabolic, it’s genetic, it’s psychological and it’s physical. No obese person likes being obese, I doubt you’ll find one person in the US population that is obese that doesn’t wish they were thin.

Are they going after EVERY business that does contribute to radical left causes? Did Coke and Pepsi not contribute to ACORN or something?

Nobody forces you to go to the store, purchase the Coke, and then drink its contents.

Adkins was the only diet that worked for me, once I heard it was all protein and no carbs it was a match made in heaven.

How about taking the enormous tax burden off of us so we can relax and afford more vacations, activities, that would keep us healthier?

You nailed it!! When I go on vacation, I get so much more exercise than I do when I am at work. I get up, I walk miles, I eat sensibly (salads, water, milk, light meals) and usually go to be exhausted.

When I am at work, I get up at 5:30am, am sitting at my computer by 6:30 and get no exercise at all. When I get home, I am usually too tired to do anything substancial. When I do go to the gym, all I have time for is 30 minutes of Cardio and some weight lifting; then it's straight home and off to bed.

Talk radio doctrine is “That which is taxed, is reduced”

This tax is a hard one to oppose intellectually. Do they tax diet Coke too?

Have you ever seen a fat person order a normal coke? They always order a diet coke with their three cheeseburgers. It is not the coke that makes them fat.

Coca Cola is a symbol for America and that is why leftists around the globe have always hated it so much.
