20-year-old attacker booked on suspicion of attempted murder
LOS ANGELES - A UCLA student has been booked on suspicion of attempted murder in the stabbing of a fellow student in a chemistry lab on campus.
Los Angeles Police Officer Sara Faden says 20-year-old Damon Thompson was arrested Thursday in the Young Hall chemistry building shortly after the attack.
Authorities say he slashed the woman's throat in front of other students who were in the undergraduate teaching lab at the time.
UCLA spokesman Phil Hampton said the victim and suspect were both 20-year-old seniors taking an organic chemistry class along with other students who were in the undergraduate teaching lab at the time.
Cyril Baida, a teaching assistant who was working in a lab across the hall, said he saw the victim stagger out of the lab while another teaching assistant applied pressure to her neck, Baida said.
"The poor girl was completely drenched with blood. She was talking at first but then she started fading away," he said. "We told her she was going to be fine and to keep breathing so she didn't pass out. I told the other TA that he was doing great so he didn't faint either."
Baida said he did not know the victim or the suspect but was told that they were lab partners or had worked together in a small group on projects in their lab section.
Los Angeles city police and campus police interviewed about 30 witnesses who were in or near the lab and might have seen the attack, Campus Police Assistant Chief Jeff Young said. The motive is under investigation.

Wow, let’s give him a peace prize.
20-year-old Damon Thompson... so what is his muslim name?
> Wow, lets give him a peace prize.
Why not? They gave one to the bloody terrorist Arabfart.
O chem is the “weeder” course for med school,,reportedly you have to ace it and it is extremely competitive now. I guess Damon won’t be going to med school but then again, maybe he will on some kind of “let’s make criminals into doctors” program run by some radical of Obama’s.
That’s what a lot of us former architecture and engineering students used to say about calculus.
It's been like that forever. At least since I went to school in the late Triassic period.
Me too!
Prisons need doctors too. Better Damon than expose some decent MD to SuperMax pop.
Guess we’ll have to ban sharp objects in the ORGANIC chemistry lab AND create more tax payer funded programs for people like THIS to “get better”. BTW, we shouldn’t punish him either. He needs “therapy”. We need to understand why he has NO SELF CONTROL and no REGARD for HUMAN LIFE.
Sarcasm off.
...
Baida said the organic chemistry lab where the attack took place is a demanding class.
“All my students have taken it and they hate it. Usually people bond during classes like that because they have to study together. I don't think it was so tough that it makes people go crazy,” he said. “It's awful, but things like this can happen anywhere.”
...
Oh, THAT explains everything. It was n’t his fault. It was the fault of the who was teaching it for making it so hard. Besides there shouldn't have been sharp object nearby for this stressed out student. Now, that's better. It wasn't the fault of the INDIVIDUAL. There was someone and something else to blame.
Is there a pattern here -- maybe losers who can't stand the fact that women don't owe them anything (even if the internet porn females seem so willing), festering over it, then acting on it (not to mention violent video games).
And, I think it's the fear of organic chem is overblown. It's tough when you're a public school product who doesn't know how to study. If you have sharp study skills, you'll be fine.
Excuse me if I am offended by the attempt to give murderers and attempted murders excuses for their behavior.
