The nominee in a looming House special election is at the heart of an angry dispute between conservatives and Republican House leadership, a rift so serious that it threatens the partys chances of keeping control of the upstate New York seat.
At issue is the National Republican Congressional Committees support for Dede Scozzafava, a New York assemblywoman who conservatives assert is so liberal that they absolutely cannot support her candidacy. Instead, many conservative groups are rallying behind Doug Hoffman, a third-party candidate running on the Conservative Party line, even though their support for him might pave the way for a Democratic takeover of the seat recently vacated by GOP Rep. John McHugh.
At a private Washington luncheon attended by activists last week, frustrations spilled over, and several attendees demanded to know why NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions of Texas, who was the featured speaker, was supporting Scozzafava over the more conservative Hoffman.
After Sessions conceded that Scozzafavas record on gay marriage and abortion fell short of where those at the lunch wanted it to be, he sought to defend her record on taxes. At that point, according to two sources who were present, the Texas congressman came under forceful pushback from several conservative leaders who insisted Scozzafava fell far short in that area as well.
I was flabbergasted that he could come into a meeting of conservatives and be as defiant as he was, said one person who was at the Free Congress Foundations Paul Weyrich lunch meeting, adding that the Texas congressman stuck a finger in our eye.
It was heated, remarked another person present at the lunch. There were some raised voices.

Dede Scozzafava - handpicked by former RINO par excellence Amo Houghton.
She is pro abortion and pro gay marriage.
Those lips have never kissed a man.
I really hope your ping box is overrun with 'Please warn me first' replies...
No, but they’ve probably kissed Reno’s and Napolitano’s.
It’s crap like this that shows we’re not ready to reclaim the majority in DC.
The GOP is shameless. Condescending. Members of the late Roman aristocracy who fiddled while Rome’s borders were being ravaged.
They think that because she has an A from the NRA the southern tier gun rights “yahoos” will vote for this abomination.
{Publicly, Republican leaders dont express concern about the conservative backlash over Scozzafava}
GOP leaders in DC are tone deaf. They need to pander to Christians instead of secular liberals.
She doesn’t even register on the GOP radar. She is a mole in the party, period.
“...even though their support for him might pave the way for a Democratic takeover...”
Better a quick death than a slow agonizing one that RINO’s will give us.
Also better to die a conservative than a sellout and a tool.
Expect more 0bama’s, and a more powerful left in general, if the right votes for(R)’s rather than what they value.
If people can’t see a difference they’ll stay home.
I know I will.
Guilty!
The national party usually refrains from interfering in state parties, but leave it to the New York GOP to push them over the edge. They were in a tight spot amid all the controversy and of course have to back the party's nominee.
The New York GOP leaders DON'T CARE IF THIS ELECTION GOES TO THE DEMOCRATS, as long as they continue to keep Republican conservatives at bay.
The RNC should put a stop to this. The Democrats have enough power in this state without being AIDED by the selfish pigs in the state leadership.
If Republicans cannot take back congress because of a looming intra-party war between conservatives and RINOs, perhaps the war needs to be fought first. Better than an alliance of convenience with the enemy.
Sure they have. They have learned that they can stick their finger in the eyes of conservatives over and over again, and still remain in power. Even after the nomination of a RINO like McCain and the election of a Marxist like Obama, conservatives are doing little more than attending Tea Parties and complaining on the internet. If conservatives don’t get their act together and start replacing the RINO in the charge of the GOP now, we never will.
This is why it is so important to actually become personally involved in the GOP. Withholding donations and voting conservative in the primaries isn’t enough. Conservatives need to be in charge of the GOP and that starts at the local level. As I’ve said before: the Republican leadership would rather see a liberal Democrat win than a conservative Republican. And nothing will change until we change it. Waiting for a knight in shining armor to come along and set the GOP right is a sure recipe for disaster. Real change begins with conservative grassroots activists.
Well, if the RINOs didn’t have such a hold on the GOP it would not matter much.
The leftist will not step aside in the GOP. They refuse to recognize they are left of some Democrats. They hate Reagan. They love statism. They are more leftist now than the left was in the 1980s. And they paint those that remain true to conservative values as extreme, racist, cold-hearted, and conspiratorial.
There is a split in the GOP. Since they no longer have power it’s time to part company and rebuild.
If your only contribution to the party is the encouragement of constant political warfare, then yes, it is best you do leave and never darken our door again. Political obscurity is your only future.
