Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said on Thursday that women would soon serve on submarines reversing a long time ban by the Navy. The Department of Defense :
Appearing on Comedy Centrals The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Mabus signaled that the Navy is moving closer to allowing coed personnel on submarines.

Secretary of the Navy on the John Stewart show? Everyday a new low. Amazing.
This seems like a bad idea.
The Secretary of the Navy is the Admiral of Stupid.
The SecNav appearing on a comedy show - this am Bizarro World!
No more 6 months of underwater sailing!
been there, done that and I know this idea will not work for various reasons discussed on another thread!
As our submarines are constantly racing to back to port to discharge little seamen.
Women soon will serve on submarines. Serve what?
No, it isn't. No chicks.
Give a whole new perspective to “up periscope”.
Women will be going down in submarines ?
Well, whatever it takes to make the nation more ineffective and stupid, y’know.
Women on subs. Just friggin great! They have been a disaster on surface ships. It will be even worse on subs.
That's right. So the submarine itself will not be the only thing full of seamen.
That's two "seamen" jokes on one thread. Is that too many?
Good. No reason that men should have to die in metal coffins alone......any bulldike badass enough to past the Navy tests for submariners is more than welcome.
You don't think they'll just lower the standards like they do for Policewomen and Firewomen?
Serve whom?
Any volunteers?

Operation Petticoat!

"The idea is to make the other poor, dumb bastard die for his country."
Only as rudders or propulsion I hope.
Honestly, the psych profiling keeps 90% of men or so out of subs.....those few women that can pass the criteria......I say let them in. They'll be assets to the US.
Political correctness trumps winning wars.
Put them in a long tube filled with seamen.
Not good.
Serve? What as...crew entertainment? I don’t mean to be funny or insulting to women.
Honestly, women are trully essential to the manning of our Armed Forces and they are a valued part of the team.
However, putting women on submarines is just plain stupid. The ONLY way this would work is if they were to produce a female only crew. Women are NOT the problem....putting men and women together under intimate conditions is the problem.
This is a good idea. [/sarc]
Until it's discovered that they are pregnant.
Will the women be required to be on birth control? How will they be forced to use birth control? They will scream that this would be an invasion of their privacy and their rights.
If Navy will not allow asthmatics to serve, how will they have women serve? The women will say that having a uterus should not be treated as a disability.
How will they deal with an etopic pregnancy while under the ice? If the corpsman only has tylenol in his bag, how is he going to handle this medical emergency?
Let’s not pretend that there will be no sexual contact on board the submarine.
How will the berthing be equitabily divided? It won’t be. The women will be given preferential treatment. The men will suffer, regardless of rank. This will be terrible for morale.
*cough*Afghanistan*Cough*
Pathetic
The few submariners I have worked with were top of the line Navy. I see no reason why women can't be combat crew...as long as the same criteria for selection is applied. BTW, I was always to busy, or sleeping to worry about getting laid......perhaps times have changed though.
Speaking of seaman jokes whats Obama doing this week end?
Best line from the movie is when Grammer's character asks his new XO what he thinks of their new boat (they were assigned an old diesel sub for some war games). The XO (played by Rob Schneider) says, "Sir! I think I need a tetanus shot just from looking at it!"
A younger and very cute Lauren Holly (from NCIS) plays the female assigned to the sub.
Probably practicing his acceptance speech after being named World Series MVP.
Also arresting crew members for sexual harrassment.
I must go down to the sea again,
To the lonely sea and the sky.
And all I ask is a cute chick,
Whom I can snuggle by.
Indeed.
A sub is where those young mens’s minds must be on their duty. Distractions and sexual tensions has no place in a nuclear armed submarine with more power then most nations.
Fools. Such fools.
PS I know hes dead
Maybe they’ll only choose the don’t-ask-don’t-tell Lesbians :)
The result will be more sailors on subs with their tubes tied...
When I first saw your reply in your inbox, I thought that maybe you were correcting a post of mine that said "Serve who?". I had said "Serve what?" These can be combined as "Serve what to who(m)?"
SNL did a skit on that.
All the womens monthly cycles synced up and they started WW III.
Horribly hormonally terrifyingly true.
This has to be a joke.
If not, my grandson will quit the submarine service and ask for a different assignment!
The last place on earth where a woman belongs is on a nuclear submarine out to sea for 139 straight days.
... and then the Navy won’t be able to take action because to punish the woman would be inequitable treatment.
agreed.
I wonder how many stripes our Condom-In-Chief wears on his dress?
I think that the hysterical Chicken Little’s who scream that this is a bad idea need to take a chill pill.
As an officer in the Australian Navy, I served with women and found that there was no real problems having them. They are as professional and dedicated as their male counterparts. In fact, they tended to be (on average) a little better.
We’ve had women on submarines for years with no drama, so I can’t imagine that American women are inferior to Australian women in their ability to serve their country.
“The few submariners I have worked with were top of the line Navy.” That is true...while underway. On shore they are hell raisers. I’ve worked with some as well.
Submarine duty is unique and requires extreme focus. If one member of the crew screws up, the entire crew could be lost. They don’t need distractions. Putting women on subs would be a terrible distraction. Even if they were the most professional, and chaste, in the entire U.S. Navy. They would still be a distraction. Also, think about the wives waiting back at home. Something more for them to worry about?
It is just a bad idea done for “social engineering.” Women are an essential and valued part of the U.S. military. However, there are just some nitches their presence would hurt not enhance....this is NO reflection upon the professionalism of female members of our military.
