Sweeping Health Bill Passes Senate Panel [O Hails "Extraordinary Diligence"]

Sweeping Health Bill Passes Senate Panel

The $829B plan would require most Americans to purchase insurance

Oct. 13: Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe announces in the Senate Finance Committee debate that she will vote for the heath care bill, telling her colleagues she has misgivings about the bill, but "when history calls, history calls."

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama's vow to overhaul the U.S. health care system has cleared a key hurdle with a Senate committee passing a bill.

The Senate Finance Committee approved legislation Tuesday that meets most of the requirements set out by Obama for expanding coverage and cutting costs. The president has made health care reform his top domestic priority.

But Obama's plan still faces an uncertain future. The measure now goes before the full Senate. The House of Representatives is working on its own bill and the two measures would eventually have to be reconciled.

Obama had hoped for bipartisan support, but only one moderate Republican on the 23-member committee, Olympia Snowe, backed the plan.

Her decision gave the final vote a significance that transcended partisan divisions. For months, congressional Republicans have been virtually unanimous in denouncing the Democratic bills as an unwarranted expansion of government influence.

The Maine senator kept virtually all of Washington guessing about how she would vote until she announced it late in the Senate Finance Committee debate Tuesday. She told her colleagues she has misgivings about the bill, but "when history calls, history calls."

The president had earlier praised Snowe and the panel for "extraordinary diligence" on health reform.

I suspect the overhaul will pass both houses. If the Dems don’t do this now, when they have both houses and the presidency, they’ll never be able to do it.

I will take some time, and alot of new seats to eventually over-throw this POS of legislation being imposed on a dissagreeing majority of Americans!

A minority in American is undertaking a covert and heavy-handed socialist revolution in American right now.

I’m actually happy about this. There are several red state rats on this committee. I was worried that they would cover their tracks and try to postpone their support for it while still letting it narrowly pass the committee. Now we can can Blanche Lincoln next year.

If passed, I think Mickey Mouse will be able to beat any incumbent next November, except for those in Pelosi-like districts.

“The House of Representatives is working on its own bill and the two measures would eventually have to be reconciled.”

The AP presents this part as a challenge of some sort. That’s BS. This would be the part where the demoncraps would lock the Republicans out and put everything they REALLY wanted in the bill back in.

Total, utter BS.

Wouldn’t forcing people into an unwanted contract be unconstitutional? There ought to be a class action case here.

I heard Rockefeller discussing his mother.

Said she had too much health care at the end of her life.

She had 12 years but I wish she had the option at the end.

The option to have a pillow over her face?

What was unsaid was that he would have liked to help her die sooner.
