President Hugo Chavez has ordered the "acquisition by force" of a landmark Hilton Hotel on Venezuela's Margarita island, the government's Official Gazette announced Tuesday.

The facility, on the Caribbean resort island of Margarita in Nueva Esparta state, was targeted for state takeover less than a month after it was used to host the Africa-South America Summit.

It is not the first time Chavez's government has checked into a Hilton and stayed for good.

Caracas has already seized the Hotel Hilton in Caracas, rechristening it the Hotel Alba, a reference to the Venezuelan-led leftist regional alliance Alianza Bolivariana para las Americas (ALBA).

In the past four years, Venezuela has implemented the nationalization of industries it sees as strategic including electrical utilities, cement, steel, oil services and banking.

Why is it that when Chavez does this, Americans snicker...

And when BO does this, they cheer?

I don't get it.

This is just his reaction to Obama seizing a car company and a bank or two... Competition among thieves, gang turf wars and all that...

Who would buy their assets with that kind of risk? Their only other option is ‘Wyatt’s Torch’.

If they already have assets there, there’s probably not much they can do. I’m sure private buyers aren’t lining up to purchase them.

Alot of assets can leave. And what can not be taken will not be maintained.

And I would add software malware that would wreck any computer systems if used by anyone else.

Let them take unmaintained, unworking assets that need mucho dinero

The article says the hotel was “nationalized.” Does this mean the government took the privately held property without paying for it?

I would guess yes. The Venezuelan government apparently thinks nationalizing industries and businesses is free money, but they’re usually acquiring debts. They never seem to pay their suppliers etc
