I don't know Black's philosophy, but I will say that he parodies heavy metal music in his mock band Tenacious D.
I think it was shtick. I wouldn't get too worked up over it.

It’s Jack Black doing his heavy metal thing. From the early days of Tenacious D his metal routine has included pseudo-satanism poking fun at the 80s when certain parts of the Christian community decided heavy metal was satanic. Those parts of Christianity now focus on Harry Potter but Jack seems to like metal more.

Obviously, Jack Black thinks himself an artist. Rather, he is a cretin poser who's soul isn't worth two pence to Satan or his henchman, Black's agent. If Black had real talent he wouldn't be at the crossroads trying to negotiate deals.

The jury saw it differently.

Forgive then father. For they know not what they do.

Praying to Satan is a sign of cheap gimmickry and nothing else.

He also does the voice for the player character in Brutal Legend, and he’s done at least one real short crossover between Brutal Legend and Metalocalypse. (Speaking of which, the second Dethklok album is out. Still waiting on William Murderface’s solo project....)

I was kind of surprised Brutal Legend (which is doubtless what he’s promoting) didn’t get an official tie-in with The D. It’s totally the same mentality and humor, the fantasy world of heavy metal where all the satanism is real but in a funny way.
