On September 10th of this year the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) posted a press release informing the world that “from October 19-25, more than 60 network TV shows [will] spotlight the power and personal benefits of service,” and that this “unprecedented block of TV programming is the first wave of a multi-year ‘I Participate’ campaign.”
On its face this all sounds rather benign in that silly, liberal do-gooder kind of way. The networks have launched these kinds of campaigns before and other than some clunky exposition awkwardly inserted into your favorite show to meet the mandate — no harm, no foul.
But this year there are a couple new strangers in town: “Volunteerism” and “Service.” You’ve heard of them. Their names have been bandied everywhere since President Obama took office, and this internal memo from the EIF to network showrunners obtained by Big Hollywood shows that the entertainment industry is well acquainted and eager to introduce both to as vast an audience as possible:

Who can hijack your TV set at will?
Barack Hussein Obama.
Not my TV. I have an off button, and the noisy box stays off except when I’m watching one of the very rare good shows that interests me - no cable, no “situation comedy”, and not much else either.
No he doesn't. I keep the d*mned thing switched off.
but the great thing is we are still free thinkers, and it would take generations to stop that, and these assholes who are helping the bomb now, will desert him once he turns on them, which all meglomainiacs do eventually...
And besides
NO ONE WATCHES these shows that will do anything off the couch.
these folks are as self centered as the bomb, they ain’t going to do much.....they have to go fishing and shopping ans stuff...
You forgot to add: mmmmmmmmmm,mmmmmmmmmmm,mmmmmmmmmmm
NBC did this kind of thing last year with ‘green week’

FOX

NBC
30 Rock, Access Hollywood, Community, Days of Our Lives, Heroes, Parks and Recreation, The Biggest Loser, The Office, Today Show
If it doesn’t involve getting something for nothing with almost all of the people who watch these shows, forget about it...good luck getting them off the couch with a message from a TV show.
SNL was pushing health care last night.
After reading the five volunteerism points to be emphasized in the memo I see that my personal favorite is missing: advancing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There’s not even a mention of the more benign “faith based works.”
I wonder why the Obama administration left that one out?
I didn’t see HGTV showing Americans buying homes in other countries on the list either.
I’m already volunteering. No one has to tell me about it. The Chicago mob sure comes across as a bunch of rubes.
Because he considers Jesus to be “the competition” for the hearts and minds of America.
Damn you commoners!
I haven’t watched network TV in years.
Does NBC still have a network. I havent watched those channels in years.
I used to LOVE SNL...I don’t think hubby or I have tuned in now for over 7 years.
