MCLEAN, Va., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- U.S. Navy officials laid out a series of initiatives intended to change the way the force uses energy, including the increased use of renewable resources.
U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus unveiled a series of measures at an energy forum in Virginia. The measures include a shift toward long-term energy savings, the increased use of hybrid and electric vehicles and the creation of a so-called Green Strike Group composed of nuclear- and biofuel-powered vessels.
The U.S. Department of Defense is the largest consumer of petroleum products in the United States, using roughly 330,000 barrels of oil per day. The U.S. Navy is the second-largest consumer in the Department of Defense, while the majority of energy transports fall within its security objectives.
The Office of Naval Research and the Navy's Task Force Energy organized the event to review energy strategies as part of a push toward environmentally friendly and cost-efficient methods.
"We have led the world in the adoption of new energy strategies in the past," said Mabus. "This is our legacy."
History repeats itself - a wind fleet.
Back to the 7th century.

...so because we refuse to drill off of Florida, Arctic etc we’ll have a Navy that’s going hybrid? Wind power? Sails?
And don’t forget about designing solar powered submarines.
Ensign: "Enemy carrier in range, sir!"
Captain: "Fire torpedos, full spread!"
Environmental Officer: "Belay that order, ensign! Captain, you have not filed your environmental impact statement with the EPA as to the damage to the environment sinking that carrier could cause!"
Captain: "Ensign, please have the crew load the environmental officer into Torpedo tube three!"
a$$ kissers
No, the power source will be galley slaves taken from the White House enemies list and Freepers. Tough luck when Zero wants to water ski.
Jack
...so because we refuse to drill off of Florida, Arctic etc well have a Navy thats going hybrid? Wind power? Sails?
If they can get more ships nuclear powered seems like a good thing. I don’t believe in global warming but it does produce 0 greenhouse gas... more importantly it will run whether we have a good supply of oil at the time or not.
Nuclear powered ships (aircraft carriers and subs) remain nuclear powered.
Surface ships and aircraft running on petroleum will be converted to bio-fuel.
New cars and trucks will be hybrids.
This isn't about being green despite that word being thrown around, it's about reducing dependence on foreign oil. Seems reasonable to me.
MODERN COMBAT:
2LT Merkle: “MEN! We are executing a sweep-and-clear of this building for Taliban. HUAH! Execute!”
Legal Officer Dumas: “HALT! We are in violation of the Foreigners with Disabilities Act, and your excessive concentration on Taliban is a Hate Crime! MP’s, arrest Merkle!”
(brief struggle while 2LT Merkle is cuffed and spirited off)
1SG Rory: “Alright, men, I’m acting NCO. We cannot take this to them, so let’s call in an airstrike! Comm Officer, what’s in the theater?”
Environmental Officer Yokidin: “Negative! Airstrikes will cause excessive pollutant release and cause a large Carbon Footprint! Additionally, no EPA Impact statement has been filed. MPs! Arrest 1SG Rory!”
(brief struggle while 1SG Rory is subdued.)
SGT Tulane: “Alright, looks like I’m in charge now. Michaels, Coulburn, I want you to deploy around the back of that building and.....”
Civil Rights Officer Angriblak: “Stop! I cannot help but notice that PVT Michaels and CPL Coulburn are AFRICAN AMERICAN, yet you want to send them to the BACK of the building.. which is a reference to being on the BACK of the bus... which is against Civil Rights Law! MP’s, arrest SGT Tulane. ....and Coulburn, take over.”
(loud struggle while SGT Tulane is put in restraints).
CPL Coulburn (picks up his rifle): “Okay, guys, here’s what......”
BATF Officer Nogunz: “HOLD UP! According to this background check, CPL Coulburn, YOU HAD A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CONVICTION IN 1992! You may NOT possess that rifle during combat!!”
Isn’t “Mabus” one of the names in Nostradamus that pops up during a conflagration to come???
From Wikipedia:
The 1996 Navy Visibility and Management of Operating and Support Costs (VAMOSC) study determined the annual operating cost of a Virginia-class [nuclear powered] cruiser at $40 million, compared to $28 million for a Ticonderoga class cruiser, or $20 million for an Arleigh Burke class destroyer. [1] Given a lower requirement for cruisers, it was decided to retire these nuclear ships as a money-saving measure.
My recommendations for the Navy and all our military:
#1 Highest war fighting ability. Better than the likely opposition.
#2 Respect and take care of the troops/sailors/airmen
#3 Keep the chickensh!t level low (political correctness, environmentalism, special interests, ie race & homosexuals).
#4 anything that degrades #1 & #2 is to be avoided.
Make nuclear powered all US Navy and Coast Guard ships of destroyer, submarine, icebreaker or medium cutter size (over 3000 tonnes) or larger. (The USS Nautilus was minimum of 3000 tonnes).
The navy going to he**. Why don’t they just put nukes in all of their ships, including destroyers? As for their vehicles, they are going to pay for that stupid maneuver.
Sure, you just have a long snorkel with a solar panel on it so when the sub submerges it can still draw power from the sun!/SAR(just in case someone things I am serious).
Very good!
That's because you are an idiot. Drilling our own oil(and using our coal resources) and leaving the Armed Forces alone would solve the problem a lot faster and more efficiently.
