Tens of billions of dollars in federal economic aid has created or saved 250,000 education jobs, the Obama administration announced Monday, although states and school systems continue to face enormous fiscal pressures.
The figures in the report issued by the White House and the Education Department do not address how many education jobs have been cut this year because of the recession, nor do they project how many are in jeopardy in the coming year.
States from coast to coast are warning of education funding troubles ahead. This month, D.C. school officials laid off more than 380 teachers and other personnel, citing a budget shortage. Fairfax County school officials said they are considering major cuts to fill a $176 million budget hole.
But the federal report suggests that without $67 billion in aid provided through Sept. 30 under the economic stimulus law, state and local budgets for public schools and higher education would be hemorrhaging. The report previews more detailed education jobs data that will be announced in coming weeks.
The largest share of the $67 billion, about $35 billion, went straight to states to shore up teetering budgets. Another $22 billion bolstered special education instruction and programs for disadvantaged students. The rest was spent on college student aid and other programs.
The report estimated that stimulus funding accounted for 9 percent of state K-12 education spending in California, Indiana, Alabama and Oregon in the 2008-09 fiscal year. The portion for Illinois was 23 percent.
In the District, Virginia and Maryland, the report found, stimulus aid accounted for smaller share of regular K-12 spending -- as much as 2 percent.
About $30 billion in education aid from the stimulus law remains unspent.
By "jobs saved," the report meant potential reductions in force that had been averted through restoration of funds.

This is bogus. The stimulus money went to school districts and was used to raise teacher salaries and to keep teachers that should have been laid off due to program changes or declining enrollments. This was done at a time when other citizens in the private sector were getting laid off or accepted pay cuts to keep jobs.
The stimulus grew government jobs, not jobs that add new value to the economy.
My calculator doesn’t go that high, but what it costs per job saved is pretty expensive, at 10 billion each of the 250k gets 40k.

We really need to look into privatizing the School system...Get the government out of this money black hole, that does little to educate, and much to indoctrinate...It burns our tax dollars with an unquenchable appetite, and the education system never improves.
Those are private sector jobs, so they don't count, especially insofar as they were not saved, nor created. Democrats believe that no level of taxes and spending has any demonstrable effect on private behavior, but that they absolutely determine the success or failure of every public undertaking.

1. How many jobs created?
2. How many jobs saved?
2(a). Furthermore, how many of the "Saved" jobs had been saved also during the previous year when there was no stimulus package? In other words "How can you prove you 'saved' these jobs if they have been ongoing for several years?
Exactly! They can't prove they 'saved/created' anything because they didn't and they can't! The private sector creates jobs that creates wealth not the government! The government creates nothing but debt & trouble.

The district in my area actually still had a net reduction in teachers because they could not count on this government aid being avalable in the future and therefore couldn’t predict future budgets and decided to hold off so the children of some of my friend’s are in high school classes of 35, 36, or 37 kids.

Depends on the state and the district. Those I know who teach in North Carolina (or at least in my area) saw a couple mandatory unpaid furlough days, a large increase in health care premiums, and stagnant wages.
