WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Senate passed groundbreaking legislation Thursday that would make it a federal crime to assault an individual because of his or her sexual orientation or gender identity.

The expanded federal hate crimes law now goes to President Obama's desk. Obama has pledged to sign the measure, which was added to a $680 billion defense authorization bill.

Has this totalitarian crap ever been brought before a court to challenge the constitutionality?

This can be used to silence Christianity. Imagine your pastor in prison for teaching the Bible.

Wonder if that includes a verbal assault? How many kids will be committing a federal crime when they say “That’s so gay” or the next generic teenaged phrase?

I thought it was understood that if you hit someone without provocation or threat of violence or intimidation, that was a crime.

No man should assault another man without an expectation of greater force being applied to stop the initiator of assault.

That could very much result in the antagonist landing in the hospital.

Why do we need a thought a crime?

And what happens if a black male attacks a white person?

Hate crime prosecution, correct?

“Until we have a way to stop the and force every bill to stand or fall on its own nothing’s going to change.”

That really is the bottom line. Nothing else matters until that is fixed.

Rest assured that silencing Christians is the real agenda behind this insanity. In Sweden a few years back this pastor got time in the slammer for the hateful, despicable crime of comparing the sin of Sweden to the sin of Sodom. OMG! /sarc

If the democRat commie thought police get their way, this is coming to America, to a church near you.

No, the ACLU won’t, likely on the grounds that current hate crime law covers nearly everyone in the United States now so they’ll probably argue it’s not discriminatory:

- Race
- Color
- Religion
- National Origin
- Gender Identity (or perceived gender)
- Sexual Orientation
- Disability

The new legislation also added a provision that makes it a crime to attack someone who has been or is in the United States Military because of their service.

In theory, if a radical anarchist group attacked a Christian, female, straight, disabled woman because she was those things, they could be charged with four hate crimes.

**Now that virtually everything is covered, I don’t understand why it’s necessary - isn’t assault assault? Murder murder?** It seems like it’s largely unnecessary. From what I gather is if someone is attacked on the street for no reason, the punishment is less than if you targeted them for a specific reason. I’m not sure the logic makes a lot of sense ... random crime doesn’t hurt the victim any less than targeted crime, does it?

Since he hasn’t signed it yet:

Hey, you in your face gay bitches! I HATE you. Stay out of my space! You goad me now that you are “special”, you are going to regret it!

Anyone have the bill number? CNN naturally does not have it, but I can’t find it with Thomas using hate, hate crime, or Matthew.

And how is THIS not a "HATE CRIME"??????

This bill is twisted and sick! So much for equal protection under the law.

Which, I think, is the point of this type of legislation. There are people that aren’t happy with crimes being prosecuted on a state level - they want all control at the federal level. Look for other crimes to be federalized.
