Colombian Football Team 'Killed'

By Will Grant BBC News, Caracas

At least 10 bodies - believed to be those of a kidnapped Colombian football team - have been found across the border in Venezuela.

The bodies, with multiple gunshot wounds, were found in Tachira. One of the team is reported to have survived.

State authorities say they suspect a left-wing Colombian guerrilla group, the ELN, is to blame for the deaths.

The team, kidnapped two weeks ago, was known as Los Maniceros or Peanut Men, as they sold nuts along the border.

The Venezuelan authorities say they are still investigating whether the bodies are those of the kidnapped team members.

But local authorities in Tachira and several local newspapers are already reporting that the footballers have been killed.

The most senior official in Tachira state, Leomagno Flores, blamed the violence on the ELN, a group led by a man known El Payaso or the Clown. He said it had been confirmed by the only survivor of the attack.

Venezuela is fighting a proxy war against Colombia and nobody wants to talk about it.

My best friend was murdered in Venezuela in June. The locals are doing nothing to “solve” the case. Not a safe place for any American IMHO.

I think we need a Venezuelan guerilla group fighting for freedom, dumping the bodies of Marxist dictators in Colombia.

Perhaps this team took too long in the shower and Chavez wanted to make an example of them (Sarc).

Was your friend there vacationing or working? Just wondering what happened - was your friend killed because of being an American?

He had lived there about 10 years and had an oil drill business there. He was jumped by a number of "robbers" as he entered his home before dusk.

They didn't end up taking a single thing from him or from his home. I figure it was a "hit" on him for being an American.

When I called the US embassy in Caracas the next day to make plans to bring his body back to the US, the lady I spoke with got all bent out of shape that I was the one to notify them of his death. The police are supposed to notify the embassy when a US national is killed and they had not followed that protocol.

Horrible!

I’d have to agree with you that Americans aren’t safe in Venezuela...especially ones with something of value.
