Reid to announce push for public option

Senate Majority Leader will announce this afternoon that he plans to push ahead with a public option vote -- one that includes an opt-out provision for states -- even though he's currently short several votes for passage, according to people close to the situation.

The Nevada Democrat has a 3:15 p.m. press conference to discuss details.

Leadership sources tell me that Reid, who spoke with virtually every member of his 60-member caucus this weekend, currently has between 56 and 57 votes for the opt-out, which is being pushed by Sen. Charles Schumer, according to Democratic aides.

A public option with a delayed "trigger" -- supported by the White House and Maine Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe -- has between 58 and 59 backers. It could be floated as an alternative if the opt-out measure fails to obtain the 60 votes needed for cloture, sources said.

Reid worked most of the weekend, convening several meetings with his leadership -- and wrangling over the details with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

I hope the idiots don’t buy this “opt out” thing.

How do you opt out of higher prices for medical equipment and supplies? You can’t.

You will pay for it even if your state “opts out”.

They don’t have the votes for the public option and they don’t have the votes without it. This is more meaningless blustering from the desperate leadership.

Question: If my state opts out of the public option, will my state also opt out of taxes that support the public option?

Mr. Reid couldn’t find water if he fell out of a boat.

“You will pay for it even if your state “opts out”.”

That’s exactly it; it’s all part of the farce. If your state “opts out” the citizens of that state will still be taxed to support all the other states. Economic circumstances will dictate that as soon as 10 states “opt in” (all 10 of those states will be the ones in economic crisis, like Michigan), the other 40 will have to follow suit.

It’s just like the idea that having a government insurance option will force competition among private insurers.

Lie, Harry, Lie. It’s all you know how to do.

“Mr. Reid couldn’t find water if he fell out of a boat.”

Probably true, as I could see Reid in a boat on it’s trailer in the back yard, pretending he’s sailing to China to collect more bribe money.

That’s quite an image. How about allowing him to sink instead?

I dont like this one either. Trigger? How about a trigger that stops the stimulus recovery spending if it doesnt work?? Idiots!

Reid sites all these polls that want the public option. Where does he come up with these? Are there concrete polls supporting the public option?

Most of those polls overpoll Democrats relative to their actual numbers in the voting population. The Washington Post poll in particular was a gift to the Democrats, with leading questions and as I said a skewed sample. The media is basically trying to help Democrats stiffen the spines of their reluctant Senators and Congresspeople. Rasmussen I find to be the most accurate, and it was in 2008, because they do balance by party I.D. relative to the actual numbers of the voting population. Rasmussen still shows deep public distrust of the public option.
