Small Businesses to NYC: Get Off Our Backs!
City Journal ^ | Autumn 2009 | Steven Malanga

Posted on 10/26/2009 7:19:57 PM PDT by Lorianne

Morton Sloan feels besieged. Over the last several years, the Bronx-based entrepreneur has watched the property taxes on the ten Morton Williams supermarkets he runs in the city swell by hundreds of thousands of dollars. Increasingly aggressive city inspectors now linger in those stores for hours, writing costly citations for items that clerks accidentally mislabel. Some of Sloan’s suppliers say they’ll no longer deliver to New York City because of the Department of Transportation’s frequent parking-ticket blitzes.

It gets worse: a new Bloomberg-administration program that encourages fruit and vegetable vendors to set up on street corners has left him scrambling to match prices with competitors who don’t have to pay rent, utilities, payroll taxes, and various other expenses. And now the city wants to plunk a 60,000-square-foot supermarket into a heavily subsidized new development just blocks from two of his stores. “I’ve never received a subsidy or asked anything of the city in 35 years, except to be left alone to do business,” Sloan says. “But everywhere I look these days, it seems like the city is trying to make life tough for me.”

Virtually everyone who runs a business in New York has long had to deal with uncompromising inspectors, unsympathetic city bureaucracies, and complex regulations, to say nothing of profit-crushing taxes. But over the past few years, small businesses’ woes have worsened significantly, say many entrepreneurs and business groups.

I lived in NYC at the time and I supported Ford 100%.

It disgusts me beyond description to know that an idiot politician controls those who - through their work, genius, and dedication - allow me to live a good life.

I don’t know how much longer we’ll take this, but when the collapse starts, please, please, folks, don’t let your politicians escape. Capture them, hold them, and bring them to justice. Real justice, not the cr*p that our courts presently dispense.

Easy for me to say, but — flee to Galt’s Gulch. Or the nearest you can find.

When push comes to shove (taxes), employers will not only NOT hire any new employees, they will lay off employees and put in more hours themselves to compensate, or have their wives and kids come to work for them instead!

hey, it's a free country. Vote like they did in Detroit.... move out and leave the city to the parasites.... it would be a beautiful thing for all those environmentalists. Central Park could extend all the way from the Financial District to Harlem. Just leave Harlem and Greenwich Village for all the enlightened people and the parasite class to just duke it out for survival of the fittest.

What just amazes me is the sheer stupidity of voting democrat after 9-11. The brainwashed lib masses somehow equated Bush/Republicans/Conservatives with flying jets into the Twin Towers. When we went to put down the muzzie rats that were jubilant about the death of 3000 New Yorkers, all they could do was get pissy about how mean we were.

F'em.... I say raise their taxes to confiscate 99% of their income and give it to the poor, drug addicted, welfare/homeless savants running around with card board houses and soiled pants. Serves them right. Just don't expect the rest of the country to follow the democrat playbook.

- And fight off the ATF, Homeland Security, Secret Service, FBI and every other god-awfully bloated federal agencies?

Only in the movies.

I know this is easy for me to say but Sloan should cash out and move somewhere less punishing to business owners. Let New York implode under its own weight.

Both NY City and State have been relying more and more on Wall St. to fund themselves. Population and business is leaving NY in droves.

Now that Wall St. is in the crapper, potentially for many years, it will be interesting to see how they sort out the present mess

This is a story of the parasite killing the host. As people and businesses flee the taxes and the city and state coffers dry up what are they going to do. Hey New York, take a look at your twin—Detroit.

I’m sorry.....I feel very little sympathy for a population that continues to vote these radicals in office. How many know that Bloomberg was a registered democrat; that is, until he realized switching parties would only benefit him, especially after the previous mayor. No I feel no sympathy. For those that do not vote for these marxists, then they need to leave immediately......do not pass go, do not collect 200.

Morton probably votes a straight Dem ticket full of marxists and then wonders why the apparatchiks are attacking businessmen.

No upside to living, working, and supporting NYC.

He ought to consider relocating to the USA.
