Reid meeting with centrists to ensure 60

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is holding a series of meetings with Democratic centrists to secure the 60 votes he needs to begin the healthcare debate.

Democratic leaders expect the legislation to hit the Senate floor next week or the week after.

Reid appears confident that the entire Democratic Conference will vote en bloc to begin the healthcare debate, but he’s not taking any chances after losing a crucial vote last week on legislation to address Medicare payments to doctors.

Nothing is certain in the wake of Reid’s announcement Monday that he would include a government-run insurance plan in the Senate bill. Centrists such as Sens. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) have said they would oppose a public option unless a trigger mechanism delayed its implementation.

But Reid is working his conference to get the votes to start the debate.

“Harry has been literally sitting down face to face with senator after senator, working through these differences,” said Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) on Tuesday.

At this point, with Reid polling so horribly in his own state, do you really think he has the ability to sway any moderates?

Sorry, Reid, but the countdown is clicking off to the election year.

Not to worry, I'm sure the RINO Twins will come through for Harry.

Reid’s news conference yesterday made it clear they do not have the votes.

The news cycle allows the dems to say...
WE HAVE IT WE ARE CLOSE

Then no they don’t

Then on to the threats of the nuke option and shoving it in.

So the next news article will say no they don’t.

It is getting real old.

AND WHY IS THE MEDIA IGNORING THIS?

Reid (note to self) must get this done before the off year election. If the Republicans win the crucial elections, the ‘moderate’ Dems will be running scared. MUST Rahm this through before they realize what will happen to Dems who vote for it.

Reid, your time is about up.

"Senator Reid, the projected deficit seems to have doubled in the past 24 hours. We're spending another $1T on something? Can you tell us what??"

"I'm not at liberty to say, but the important thing is that we now have the votes for Healthcare reform which will save the paxpayers money by giving more healthcare to more people than ever before. No more questions."

[these are not actual quotes]

Exactly. Snowe will vote for cloture. She likes to be bipartisan (unless there’s a vote on cloture for tax cuts, then she sticks a shiv in her own party). Then when it passes with 51 votes, she’ll be able to tell her constituents that she voted against the health care overhaul.

Noticed that Evan Bayh wasn't mentioned. He must have sold out early and cheap. Probably wishing he would have held out. He could have been ambassador to Ireland or something.

That was my thought exactly. If I was a centrist, I’d play it safe and insist on waiting to vote until after the November elections!

as of this writing, Snowe will not vote for cloture - read her statement from yesterday.

There are other people at FR who regretably don’t understand the imperative of a Christie win next week in NJ - a Christie win will kill Obamacare.

Exactly. Snowe will vote for cloture

Don’t you think she feels used and snookered at this point?
I’m sure Reid told her that it would have no Public Option in order to get her committee vote.

She’s a Rino. It’s all a front. She actually wants a public option. She’s playing both ends against the middle. She gets to be against it and she will help get it passed. This is how they work.
