Romney Brings GOP Star Power to Virginia, Doesn't Step Into New York Special Election
Fox News ^ | Oct. 28, 2009

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who's eyeing another White House bid in 2012 after an unsuccessful run in 2008, endorsed former Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell for governor on Wednesday.

-snip-

Romney was also asked whether he would make an endorsement in the House of Representative race in New York's 23rd district, where Republican nominee in New York's 23rd is Dede Scozzafava, a state assemblywoman, is facing a threat from the right.

"I have chosen not to endorse the Republican candidate in New York's 23rd District, "Romney said, "and that should speak a certain amount of volume. I can't endorse our candidate in that race.

Scozzafava favors both abortion and gay rights, which her supporters say is the kind of Republican who can win a race in a district like New York's 23rd. But conservatives say the traditionally GOP district would be better served by Doug Hoffman, who is running on the Conservative Party ballot

Hoffman's challenge and his growing strength makes it possible that Democrat Bill Owens could steal the seat away from the Republicans. Democrats have begun targeting him in the district rather than focusing on Scozzafava. Polls show Hoffman leading both major party candidates.

Romney's prospective 2012 Republican rival Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty did recently endorse Hoffman over Scozzafava, as did former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint.

Shocker: like Huck, Romney votes "present" while trying to camouflage it as a courageous stand. No endorsement, no financial support for Hoffman.

I’ll sit out the next election before I will vote for this guy. No more RINOS for me!

“”I have chosen not to endorse the Republican candidate in New York’s 23rd District, “Romney said, “and that should speak a certain amount of volume. I can’t endorse our candidate in that race.”

Says it all. No balls. Or perhaps, BBs for balls. Doesn’t
want to tick off the Republican hierarchy and align himself
with conservatives and against RINOS...

Well, Romney IS a Republican. I don’t think much of the guy, but not endorsing the liberal GOP running in NY23 while the RNC is backing her is noteworthy.

Only 50% of the way there.

I support Palin, not Romney. However, what he said was worded diffewrently than stating that he was not going to make an endorsement. He said he COULD NOT endorse Scozzafava. He also leaves the door open for a last minute endorsement of Hoffman.

Why would he do such a thing? He might anticipate someone saying later that he endorsed non-Republicans. Yeah, he could explain the circumstances, if he gets the opportunity.

He still won’t get my vote. I still don’t believe much of what he says. But this statement is a step farther than Huck’s.

Last time Romney brought his “star power” to VA he drew a huge “crowd” of DOZENS, according to the local press. Yes, DOZENS turned out to see him, wow. To me that sounds like a pretty dim star.

At the risk of sounding over-confident, it sounds like the Virginia Governors race will flip to the GOP.

If Romney wanted to be useful, he could go up to New jersey and try to help out Doug Christie.

Sorry to say this, but Romney’s endorsement could be the kiss of death for McDonnell’s campaign.

Mittens, what a bold move, endorsing Bob McDonnell after polls reveal 14% lead over Deeds. As Dan Ratter once signed off, Courage.

And the cold spit warmth of his position in NY’s 23rd special election.

Damn! A veritable Patton.

LOL!

You can check my history... I like Mitt. But I would tell him to join with Sarah and the conservatives to help take the country back from the brink

I agree with you. We cheer that Douglas Wilder did not endorse Deeds in VA, and see it as a snub to the Dim candidate -- who is backed by the national Dim leaders, as well as a subtle nod to McDonnell. Mitt basically is doing the same in NY-23.

McDonnell doesn’t need Romney. He was just being polite.

According to earlier reports, Romney has already said he will not endorse anyone in NY23 (not that his previous words mean anything to his future actions). At least Huck praised Hoffman—Romney didn’t even have the guts to do that.

They’re both sniveling cowards, IMO.

Coward only shows up when the win appears a sure thing so as not to damage his “star power.” Low rent.
