“New clues in the search for officer’s killer”

SNIPPET: “The vehicle in the video matches the vehicle described by surviving Student Officer Brett Sweeney.

The vehicle is described as acting strangely on the video. Police are keeping the exact description close the vest at this time. Previously they had said they believed the car was a light colored small import like a Toyota.
In addition they do believe the vehicle was struck by at least one of Officer Sweeney’s rounds and should have some damage.

Additionally they have stated that they found a backpack in downtown Seattle that had officer’s names and when they went and on and off shift. This could be a big break as it may yield DNA of a potential suspect(s).”

“Fallen officer Timothy Brenton remembered as hero, teacher”
Story Updated: Nov 6, 2009 at 1:29 PM PST
By KOMO Staff

SNIPPPET: “SEATTLE - Seattle Police Officer Timothy Brenton was remembered as a hero and a teacher at a solemn funeral attended by thousands Friday at Seattle’s Key Arena.

The funeral began with remarks by Deputy Chief Clark Kimerer and a moment of silence in the somber arena for the fallen officer who was killed by a gunman who still is at large.

“In our memorial today we seek to give back to Tim some measure of the devotion, humanity and selflessness that he gave to each of us,” Kimerer said. “The ceremonies of honor we undertake today represent our human desire to find meaning in unfathomable tragedy.”

He remembered Brenton as a teacher, a hero, and a “man of quiet dignity and virtue ... an upright courageous man, a good father, son, husband, brother and friend.”

The ceremony for Brenton followed a long memorial procession Friday morning of more than 1,000 law enforcement officers and firefighters from throughout the region.

Brenton’s family arrived under police escort just before 9 a.m. and, as the sun broke through the clouds, the procession began its path through the city on the way to KeyArena.”

“Police: Suspect in cop’s shooting had bomb-making arsenal”

Story Published: Nov 7, 2009 at 12:24 PM PST

By KOMO Staff and News Sources

SNIPPET: “SEATTLE - The suspect in the shooting death of a Seattle police officer was “a lone domestic terrorist” whose apartment was a virtual arsenal of bomb-making materials and weaponry, Seattle Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said Saturday.

There also is evidence that the suspect, Christopher M. Monfort, 41, of Tukwila may have been planning to escalate his activities in the coming days if he had not been caught, Pugel said.”

SNIPPET: “Investigators who later searched his apartment found weapons, a huge stash of ammunition, bomb-making materials and newspaper clippings about an Oct. 22 arson that officers believe he was involved in.

Among the weapons were two long rifles, including a military-style assault rifle, Pugel said at a Saturday afternoon news conference about the case.

Components for improvised explosive devices were also found.”

SNIPPET: “Those blasts may have been experiments by Monfort and may indicate that he planned a larger-scale terrorist action, Pugel said.”

SNIPPET: “Pugel said Monfort was formerly employed as a security guard, but lost the job at some point. Detectives now are checking to see if he ever applied for a job as a police officer.

Police still have not looked at Monfort’s two cars - a Ford Crown Victoria similar to a police cruiser and another vehicle, covered by a tarp, which may be the Datsun 210 used in Officer Brenton’s shooting.”

SNIPPET: “The man, 41, was shot in the head at 2:50 p.m. and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to Interim Seattle Police Chief John Diaz. The man was in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Sources say the man is Christopher J. Monfort. Records show he was a student at Highline Community College. An adviser there said he was interested in criminal justice.”

SNIPPET: “Police have since detained two other men, one at a bus stop near the apartment complex and another in Federal Way. The men may have ties to the wounded man and the apartment, the source said.”

“Suspect in police shooting ‘lone domestic terrorist’
Bomb making materials found in man’s apartment”

By CASEY MCNERTHNEY and CHRIS GRYGIEL
SEATTLEPI.COM STAFF

SNIPPET: “The man who is a suspect in the Halloween night slaying of a Seattle police officer is a “domestic terrorist” who had explosive devices in his apartment, police officials said Saturday.

Christopher J. Monfort is believed to have worked alone in the fatal shooting of Seattle Police Officer Tim Brenton, as well as the Oct. 22 firebombing of four Seattle police vehicles, said Jim Pugel, Seattle Police assistant chief.

“This man, from everything that we can tell, appears to be a lone domestic terrorist,” Pugel said at a news conference.”

SNIPPET: “At one point Monfort wanted to be a policeman, according to people who knew him. He studied law enforcement issues at a local community college and the University of Washington. A former advisor said he was a “natural leader,” but a neighbor called him “weird.””

“Christopher Monfort, Suspect in the Murder of Officer Tim Brenton, Wanted to be a Cop”

By Caleb Hannan in Crime & PunishmentSaturday, Nov. 7 2009 @ 2:38PM

SNIPPET: “Rosemary Stevens rented a room to Monfort 18 years ago in Pasadena. The actress tells the P-I that while he was working as a waiter in a steakhouse, Monfort’s dream was to wear a badge for the L.A.P.D.”

SNIPPET: “While in the UW scholarship program, Monfort focused on the work of Paul Butler, a law professor at George Washington University. Butler is a proponent of a controversial tactic known as jury nullification, whereby a jury can ignore a judge’s instructions and acquit defendants, especially black defendants convicted of a non-violent crime, no matter how strong the case against them.

“It is the moral responsibility of black jurors to emancipate some guilty black outlaws,” Butler wrote in a 1995 Yale Law Journal article, adding: “My goal is the subversion of American criminal justice, at least as it now exists.”

As the Times reports, Monfort, who is half-black, wrote in his project abstract that he wished to “illimunate and further” Butler’s scholarship.

Wegner is the last person quoted to have spoken at length with Monfort. He says they touched base five or six months ago. Monfort was “driving truck” and volunteering his Friday’s at a juvenile detention center.”

SNIPPET: “Attempts to reach Monfort’s mother Suzan have thus far been unsuccessful. But the Times did speak with Vicki Malone, her business partner in a Curves in Bethel, Alaska, who said that Suzan was on her way to Seattle to check on the condition of her only child.”
