It's a global pandemic, says the World Health Organization.
It's a national emergency, says Barack Obama.
U.S. deaths have surpassed 1,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
Nearly 5,000 have died worldwide, according to WHO.
That sounds bad.
But is it worth the hysteria?
What is it about these deaths that have government health bureaucracies apoplectic?
Is it time for a little context?
What happens when we turn to the same sources to compare deaths due to swine flu with other leading causes of preventable deaths?
Worldwide, nearly 3,000 people die from malaria every day.
Worldwide, nearly 6,000 people die from AIDS every day.
So what is it about this illness that has government so shook up? ...

Ultimately I think its about control. Getting people to fear you and ultimately, view you, the vaccine provider, as the Savior. Obama must be so proud of himself.
Well I ain’t buyin his snake oil.
they are not keeping actual numbers...the numbers are superficial....
and even if the numbers are what they say they are...SO WHAT?.......its the flu....
Wondering if it was about how much control they could do under an emergency? Thoughtful folks want to know - ya know.
exactly
Originally it was to be called, HN1, but it was realised that it could be interpreted as " Horny One."
I heard the CDC state that as of Nov. 1, 2009, 115 people have died of H1N1 in the U.S.A.
That is far, far below the 1000 deaths I’ve heard repeatedly from the White House.
Is there any proof of that?
Schools and universities are closed, and absenteeism in industry is very high.
Western Ukraine is hardest hit.
Hysteria for some people it’s a way of life reminds me of democrats.
this actually plays into the government’s poer grab:
1) create a crises - all the hype about Swine flu, despite the fact that it is relatively mild
2) offer a cure - vaccine is on the way
3) screw up the distrubution - witness all teh phone promises, and undeliverables.
4) once the people are firmly ‘cared for’ explain the SNAFU by exclaiming - if government only had the power to -— (their agenda) this wouldn’t have happened.
viola! massive public support for another loss of freedom.
Some cry favoritism over Obama daughters’ swine flu vaccination, others say it’s good example
“You definitely think there’s some favoritism going on,” said Vernon Stanley, who stood for hours in the snow Tuesday to get his 6-year-old granddaughter vaccinated near Salt Lake City.
Snarky comments began popping up on blogs and other online sites after Tuesday’s announcement that the Obama girls got vaccinated by the White House doctor last week.
“We have two very compromised special needs children in our home” but can’t find any vaccine, Walter Ponfick of New Braunfels, Texas, said in comments posted on a Fox News blog. “Makes me think just the important population is able to be taken care of.”

I had swine flu last week. Other than having an urge to roll in the mud, it didn’t impact me very much.
fyi
You’ll be hard pressed to get the manufacturers to admit it, but it has been found in some of the versions of the vaccines as has thimerisol. We are testing a version at the medical center where I work on children that does not contain squalene or thimerisol. We are told the general public very possibly will receive a vaccine containing both.
[[I heard the CDC state that as of Nov. 1, 2009, 115 people have died of H1N1 in the U.S.A.]]
That figure is for pediatric deaths- not the total deaths from the flu- in a normal flu season, there are only 40 some odd pediatric deaths for the whole flu season, and already, there are 115 pediatric deaths, and hte season hasn’t even begun yet- The CDC is statign that the deaths are far above average, not below.
“The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) based on the 122 Cities Report has increased and has been higher than what is expected at this time of year for four weeks now. In addition, 22 flu-related pediatric deaths were reported this week; 19 of these deaths were confirmed 2009 H1N1, and three were influenza A viruses, but were not subtyped. Since April 2009, CDC has received reports of 114 laboratory-confirmed pediatric 2009 H1N1 deaths and another 12 pediatric deaths that were laboratory confirmed as influenza, but where the flu virus subtype was not determined.”
My neighbor, a 19 year old girl, just went off to college, got the swine flu, ended up in hospital, got pnemonia, and was just diagnosed with Guillian-Barre (sp?) syndrom, which is deadly- we just found out this morning- she was a healthy young woman, very active (great at sports, excellent student top of her class academic wise- scholarships etc), and she’s now facing a battle for life at 19 years old
sorry= forgot the link to the CDC report: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/update.htm
More: “Forty-eight states are reporting widespread influenza activity at this time. They are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. This many reports of widespread activity are unprecedented during seasonal flu.”
“One of the things that we’ve been surprised to see is that even among people who have an underlying condition, such as asthma or heart disease or lung disease, only half sought care for influenza-like illness. Only half went to their provider. This emphasizes that whether or not vaccine is present and whether or not people recognize that they have an underlying condition, people with underlying conditions, who have fever and cough, should see their provider promptly. Children are particularly high priority for prevention and for treatment. This is a younger people’s flu. In a usual flu season, 90% of the deaths are among people over the age of 65. In H1N1, 90% of the deaths are in people under the age of 65. Up until now, there have been 114 laboratory confirmed deaths among children. More than two-thirds of those have been children with underlying conditions. In terms of the numbers of cases, hospitalizations and deaths, our focus is to prevent cases as effectively as possible. And to encourage treatment.”

It is acting differently than other flus. It’s affecting children.
My daughter has epilepsy. Normally, I wouldn’t be too worried about seasonal flu. Her doctors recommend regular flu shots, but nothing unusual.
However, H1N1 is affecting kids with neurological problems more than the seasonal flu does.
It’s different. Of course, the CDC does not release numbers based on the pre-existing condition. I’d like to know the hospitalization/death rates for people with epilepsy and also with asthma.
What is your chance of being hospitalized or dying if you get this flu?
Anyway, my daughter just got her vaccination for H1N1 this morning. Our county (Santa Clara county with over a million people) only got 26,000 vaccines, and my daughter was on the high priority list. Her sister with severe asthma triggered by colds/flu did not make the cut.
