Emmerich 'feared fatwa for 2012 scene'

Roland Emmerich has admitted that he feared a fatwa would be placed on him if he filmed a scrapped scene for 2012.

The filmmaker is well known for decimating famed landmarks on movies including The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day. He stated that while he decided to destroy the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro because he is "against organised religion", he was fearful of the Islamic religious decree for a sequence that was planned but not shot.

The 53-year-old wanted to demolish the Kaaba, which is a cube-shaped building at the heart of Mecca and is the centre of prayers and the Islamic Hajj pilgrimage.

He told Sci-Fi Wire: "Well, I wanted to do that, I have to admit. But my co-writer Harald said I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie. And he was right. We have to all in the Western world think about this.

"You can actually let Christian symbols fall apart, but if you would do this with [an] Arab symbol, you would have a fatwa, and that sounds a little bit like what the state of this world is.

"So it's just something which I kind of didn't [think] was [an] important element, anyway, in the film, so I kind of left it out."

2012 is scheduled to open in cinemas on November 13.

I liked the Mel Gibson film The Patriot, which this weasel also directed.

Stargate was the stuff that 3rd rate ‘Doctor Who’ episodes are made of.

Screw you, Roland. I won’t be giving you any of my money at the box office, that’s for damned sure.

He’s not a coward for deciding not to pick on people who will fight back. He’s a coward for selectively attacking a group of people (Christians) who he knows will not fight back.

On top of that, the media will surely celebrate his “courage” in choosing to attack Christian symbols.

When the Brooklyn art museum featured a painting of the Virgin Mary with cow dung on it, the New York Times printed the picture several times and editorialized in favor of the museums “courage” in displaying it.

When the Danish cartoonists drew mocking images of Mohammed, the New York Times wrote an extensive article on the subject, discussing the issue of sensitivity and freedom of speech. The illustration for the article? The Virgin Mary covered in cow dung again.

That’s cowardice.

I think it is good! It is one of those cases where silence (on Islamic stuff) is more eloquent than anything else. His statement that he was unable to express his views is a powerful one and highlights the barbaric nature of Moslems and the chilling effect they have had on free speech.

I knew it, I knew it. I called this the moment I saw the trailer.

He stated that while he decided to destroy the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro because he is "against organised religion", he was fearful of the Islamic religious decree for a sequence that was planned but not shot.

The trailer takes great delight in destroying the Christ the Redeemer statue, and follows it with a long scene in which St. Peter's Basilica is destroyed little by little while stupid Catholics watch in horror.

Bigots are invariably the worst kind of coward.

It’s simple really.
If you are convinced of the evil of organized religions, why would you attack those that do not threaten you with retribution yet cower to those that do?
That is the very definition of cowardice.

You and I had the same reaction, my freeper friend. I thought, “Of all the landmarks you can destroy in the world for your disaster porn, you pick TWO iconic Christian images?” Makes you wonder if he has a similar message to send America in general when he destroys the White House in two of his films.

He’s a coward because he doesn’t want to get him and others killed over a movie scene?

He's a coward because he didn't want to risk it.

Being obedient is one thing. Letting anti-God aholes like this trample all over us is another thing entirely. But then again, I was never (and will never be) one of those Christians that can willingly turn another cheek.

I’m not, after all, bucking for Apostle status. I’m just a humble human and sinner..... trying the best I can to rise above my inner demons. The ones that tell me to kick Satan’s, (and his minions), @ss whenever and wherever possible.

I suppose if you folks had been in his place, you would have shot the scene.

Had I shot the scene it would have included someone urinating on that obscene book they worship.
