I wish I could share this optimism. With regards to the 2 "federal" elections held, both in CA-10 and NY-23, 0bama won.

If anything, he'll use that as a mandate to move even further to the left.

Obama doesn't NEED any mandate to move further left. He'll move further left in any case. And yes, the CA-10 and NY-23 results will be cited by his spin-machine as justification for his Stalinization of America.

But Morris' point is still well taken. Democrats in normally red districts, or in blue districts in red states, have to be feeling the heat of the Virginia election and what it means.

It means voters in red states (and some blue states too) are not supporting anyone who supports Obama. Period.

He "lost" the executives of two large very Democratic states, in campaigns he personally invested in.

That's alot more lost than the gain of 2/435ths of one half of one third of the Federal government.

I’m with you. I’m happy my state of NJ elected Christie over Corzine, but the very same voters approved a 400 million dollar bond issue to pay for a green acres program (the gubmint buying land). Stupid moron voters. On the one hand they complain about their taxes being too high, on the other hand they get a chance to vote NO on 400 million in new borrowing and spending and they approve it instead. For what? To buy some marshes and meadows. Freakin morons.

Only in the fashion he always has in the past - by default.

I both wish Obama had campaigned in CA10 (people in this area are in a lot of pain) and wish that the RNC money sent to NY23 had been sent to Harmer instead. Obama's hope & change is not working out very well in the bay area.

The lines of CA10 are drawn so strangely[1] that I'm not sure exactly what its demographics are even though I'm nearby at the moment. Probably a gerrymandered D.

[1] In California that means rural strongly R areas attached to an overall D district.

At least in NJ it was a strategic loss, not a referendum on conservatism. CA continues to spiral into Marxism. VA is HUGE for conservatives because we actually voted in CONSERVATIVES! All 3! No linguini spined “moderates” or “independants”. That doesn’t send a message to ALL who waver and destroy in Washington?!

He can use it all he wants, but I do not think that it will fool those "Blue Dog" Democrats who got elected from fairly conservative districts. The notion that Virginia is a bell weather, is not a new idea. The Dems used in in 2008 and several political analysts made the same point leading up to this election.

On the other hand, CA-10 is liberal enough so that no point was made by the Dem victory there. In NY-23, you have an unknown who comes out of nowhere to almost win the race with very little support from the two major parties. (The GOP did throw Hoffman a bone at the end after going "all in" with Dede) As it is, the Dems required her endorsement to put them over the top. This seat is ripe for the taking in 2010 no matter how they spin it.

CA 10 was NOT a win for Obama. that district is 18% greater in registered Dems than Repubs the rest are decline to state (and there ar 20% of them). That means in a district that is VERY liberal in a state that is bluer than blue, Harmer managed to generate a pretty decent turn out. look Garimendi won mostly on name recognition. He has been around forever (think Willie Brown only stupid).

Harmer was within 10% and that ain’t horrible. The districts have been gerrymander so severely out here that I would NEVER expect to see one party oust another in a district.

NY 23 hell the GOP shot themselves in the head with that one. Just glad that Owens is more conservative than DeDe would have been. Sad that Doug didn’t pull it out
