People in the company of Clark County prostitutes collectively reported having $1.4 million in cash and goods stolen from them during the first nine months of this year dupes of a larceny genre better known to police as the trick roll.
By years end, its estimated the total reported losses will exceed $2 million almost double last years total, and probably a fraction of the real amount.
How many people file police reports, after all, when their prostitutes disappoint?
Enough, at least, for Metro vice detectives to determine the problem is getting worse, and assign two detectives to trick roll investigations exclusively. Theyve gotten roughly one case every day this year. In 2007 it was more like one a week.
That increase could have something to do with the economy. Fewer tourists with less money means supply exceeds demand. Prices drop and competition ratchets up for prostitutes, many of whom police say must meet nightly quotas set by pimps. Metro Sgt. Donald Hoier, though, says the problem picked up before the economy fell, simply because Clark County was saturated with sex workers and outlets for illicit entertainment.***
Consider the reported losses Hoier reads from a list of cases: $10,000 in cash, casino chips and a laptop; $30,000 in cash and chips; $20,000 Rolex; $6,000 Rolex; $5,000 cash; and perhaps the most interesting, a case Hoier can only hint at $175,000 in casino chips.
These are preposterous amounts, which is probably why they were reported in the first place.
Sometimes these are crimes of opportunity. A watch is left out, a laptop is folded in the corner.
But there are prostitutes for whom sex is only a pretext to theft, and others who have no intention of sleeping with their clients, Hoier said.

It’s George Bush’s fault
I have not ever heard of any prostitutes that actually sleep with their clients. The client may end up asleep.
You can either have the money and the hammer, or you can walk out of here. You cant have both. What do you want?
Actually, in Clark County (where Las Vegas is), prostitution is illegal to begin with. So if someone were to "hire" a local girl, he's already inviting someone who has no problems breaking the law into his "domain."

Undercover operations?
Had to re-read a couple sentences, wasn’t sure if they were talking about local prostitutes or members of Congress.
They think that’s a problem...maybe they should spend a few minutes looking at the alimony and child support laws, ESPECIALLY in the blue states, the ones with no-fault divorce.
No that is where the REAL THEFT is taking place.
It's kind of like how the guy who sells in front of the middle school gives all of the crack dealers a bad name.
That’s the way it goes,
First your money, then your clothes.
That tactic has been around forever. The prostitute always asks for the money up front. It's an industry standard (and understandable since there are just as many dishonest men as there are dishonest ladies).
The lady then excuses herself or conveniently "forgets" something she left in the car and will "be right back" and the john is left there like an idiot waiting for her to come back which she never does.
Another twist to this is the lady brings a large male companion who stands outside the door and threatens the john with bodily harm if he tries to stop the girl from leaving after she gets the money.
It's known as the "cash-and-dash". Most prostitutes figure (correctly) that the johns won't report this to the cops because, after all, they'd be admitting that they were propositioning an illegal activity.
There are some upscale pros who will get paid, do the act, wait for the man to fall asleep and then pilfer other things from the room while he is sleeping and leave before he awakes.
Doesn't surprise me that this problem has increased with the bad economy but Vegas has always been a town with more than the usual amount of scammers and hustlers. This is nothing new.
Me too. At first I read "presstitutes", but then I remembered the MSM never reports on their own kind.
Some of the ‘akassi’ just might leave the John something new and different - AIDS.
Also a big problem in Las Vegas - not everything you do in Vegas stays in Vegas - it can come home to kill your family.
