President Obama came in for growing criticism over the weekend for his insensitive handling of the bloody shoot-out in Fort Hood, Texas, where 13 people were killed by a Muslim officer in the US Army.
Mr Obama is not scheduled to arrive at Americas largest military base until tomorrow to attend a memorial service for victims of Major Nidal Malik Hasan, the Army psychiatrist who opened fire on a group of unarmed soldiers.
The Presidents jarring absence from Fort Hood in contrast to a low-key visit by the former president George Bush on Friday is not the only element of his response to the tragedy that is bothering his critics, Democrats and Republicans alike.
In particular, much has been made of a transcript of the press conference where Mr Obama first gave his official response to the mass shooting. The President opened his remarks he was attending a Tribal Nations Conference for Americas 564 federally recognised Native American tribes with jocular shout-outs to various people in the audience. Only later did he turn his attention to the attack, saying: I planned to make some broader remarks. But as some of you have heard, there has been a tragic shooting.
(Obama) did not appreciate the gravity of what he represents, Brad Blakeman, a former deputy assistant to George Bush, told Fox News. He should have begun his official remarks with the tragedy. The fact that he used colloquialisms like shout out and was so cavalier at the beginning was a reflection of his inability to be presidential. Hes not comfortable enough in his role yet.
Unusually, the liberal Boston Globe agreed. In an editorial at the weekend the newspaper said: It takes more than scripted eloquence for Presidents to connect

He’s not insensitive. He hates the USA and its military. He loves the death cult. He doesn’t give a damn about our innocent American soldiers killed by a death cult practitioner.
I bet that the One uses the funeral ceremony as an opportunity to tell us evil “racist” Americans that we should not condemn ALL members of the middle eastern death cult that preaches killing Christians and Jews.
Obi only probable reaction is gratitude for the diversion so his suicide plan could get though the House.
I heard the remarks POTUS Obama gave on last Thursday afternoon opening with his “cute & corny” remarks to his Indian (American) audience. The Fort Hood shooting massacre remark was given as an afterthought. Disgusting to say the least, and non Presidential by far. IMHO, this POTUS has zero regard for our military and I hope his attendance at the memorial service on Tuesday along with the first lady will be met with silence. I, personally would love to see them receive a grand round of deserved boo’s, but that would demean the office of our POTUS, so the silent treatment is the way to go. This incident, terrorist, as it is proving to be, shows the ill concern our POTUS has for the safety of our nation at large. I suspect the American people are learning that this administration will not do all possible to protect the American people or our magnificent military folks across the board. Yes, America, elections do have consequences!!!!
Won’t it be speshul to watch the TOTUS wipe a fake tear from his eyes at the Ft Hood memorial service, sitting beside some faux imam doing the same
I’m sure he will say that when the Senate passes healthcare bill these tragedies will stop. Then he will lecture everyone about forgivemness and tolerance and quote from the koran the Torah and the Bible.

"I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we get all the facts," he said. "What we do know is, families, friends and an entire nation is grieving."
This was also the point where he also ordered the US Flag to be flown at half-staff until Veterans Day (almost a whole day after the incident). We, myself included, here at FR, frequently ask what would Bush'43 have done when talking about various Presidential Actions. This one, I submit, would be CRYSTAL CLEAR and would have started that afternoon of the attack.
There would have been apologies to the "Native Nation's Conference" but sorry, circumstances will keep the President from attending. The 5pm presser would have been about what is known about Ft. Hood and the flag order would have been given then while he would ask for the nation's prayers for the wounded and families of the fallen. Obama FLUNKS in every way.
I want to think that the reason Obama is being so cautious is BECAUSE of the firestorm he justly earned for the Professor Gates incident BUT I just cannot believe it! This is a part of the whole man, Obama is a revolutionary and despises the traditions of the United States, the military, the police and the US Constitution. Day-by-day I find my disgust rising at this Administration.
Turns out, he wasn't a Congressional MOH recipient anyway. He'd been awarded the civilian equivalent by BHO a few months ago.
Comments on the article are quite enlightening.
[Wow, ever since Peter Canellos took over as edit page editor, i’ve noticed these more conservative editorials, and of course, i like them. . .]
Guess I'll check the Globe more often.
I bet he is practicing with a bottle of liquid tears as we speak. You know how can he put them in eyes without anyone seeing him.
