Poor Mr.Bird. He should have taken the “Clint Eastwood-GranTorino” approach when he came out on his lawn to protest. But since he didn’t,these punkasses should get the death penalty.

re: some of the teens in custody have been well-known by officers for petty crimes
That's how it starts and that should be a clear warning to the parents and the authorities.
Remember the first thing Mayor Rudy did when he decided it was time to clean up The Big Apple? He went after the small things, by cutting the future law breaker at the beginning of the chain instead of the other end he had remarkable success.
These kids are everywhere these days. Their parents buy them new cars while they are still high school students, they have cell phones, Ipods, laptops, etc. They have everything, except the attention of their parents to know where they are are with whom they are doing whatever at a time when high school kids should not be on the street.
It truly saddens me that we will spend thousand and thousands of dollars a year to keep these punks incarcerated for a length of time and when they are turned loose on the rest of us they will be worse than they are today.
Our whole system is broken. We are increasingly unable to protect the innocent or punish the guilty.

"He didn't fight back because they were kids." He's a better man than me. I would've confronted them only if armed and wouldn't have hesitated to shoot if they were trying to kill me. Poor guy.

I never directly confront people like this. Once you have established that someone is an arsehole, you can be sure they will not respond to civilized discourse.
In my neighborhood, I used to have problems with a neighbor behind us playing extraordinarily loud music. Every time he did it, I'd call the cops, and they'd shut him down.

Hmm, a gang beat-down that results in death... I don’t know the Texas Criminal Code that well, but I recall seeing something about those circumstances adding up to an “aggravated” crime, the same as using a gun or knife. It may swing these minors over the line to be tried as adults, too.

Good strategy. If you confront them they can end up calling the cops on you, and they'll probably play the music louder and more often just to annoy you.

Why would anyone confront youths without a gun? Just insane. Did he value his own safety so little?

I think this is BAD advice. I agree that they love confrontations.
The reason that they do enjoy it is that they are looking for someone to tell them NO!
If these punks are never told "No", their behavior becomes more outrageous. They KNOW that what they are doing is wrong, but like all predators, they are testing the fences. They find no fences and it makes them crazy inside.
So, I say confront them, and be prepared for an escalation.
By being prepared, I mean prepared with superior firepower..like a 12ga with #4 buck (more pellets than 00 buck).
