AP : Public option is dead

Nancy Pelosi may have been all smiles on Saturday, but the difficulties encountered in her full-court press on the ObamaCare bill will only get worse, the AP reports this morning. The AP declares the public option dead, thanks to skeptical Democrats, and Joe Lieberman pledges to stop the bill from coming to the floor with one included. The LA Times concurs:

House approval of legislation Saturday — even if Democrats can move it no further — was an accomplishment that has eluded presidents for decades. But the close vote and the exertions it took to secure a majority were laden with warning signs as the issue moves to the Senate.

Even though the House is a bastion of liberalism, the healthcare overhaul was a tougher sell than expected and the bill turned out to be more conservative in its price tag, more limited in the scope of its government-run insurance option and tighter in its restrictions on abortion funding than many Democrats had hoped.

Itend to agree, but then again I thought that it was not going to make it out of the House. So my track record is not that good. :-)

It wouldn't have made it out of the House had not the Democrats let the anti-abortion language in it, which only delayed the Bill getting killed later.

This has been a huge strategic mistake by Bam, Nancy, Harry etal. They are over reaching, there is little public support for what they are doing and even if it passes it can be “undone”. All this has served to do is energize the Conservative base big time, VA and NJ as well as upstate NY are clear examples of this. Senators know this, and so far they have not be as willing as the House to commit political suicide by supporting this grotesque piece of legislation. It will be after the first of they year before this gets anywhere, it is difficult to imagine these guys want to be talking about the bill in March of 2010 with the election a few months away.

I completely agree.

The Bill would have had to pass by almost 400 votes in the House for the Senate to seriously consider it.

As it was, even with the anti-Abortion language, it barely made it.

If the Bill is changed in anyway, by removing the Abortion language it will fail.

If the Abortion language is taken out, it will fail.

This initial vote was just to cover Pelosi and Obama, so they wouldn't look like total failures.

Plus Harry is scared to death about his seat next November, he is not going out on a limb for Bam.

I don't see it either.

And the longer the Bill sits in the Senate, the less likely it will see the light of day.

If the Demos want to go down this path, then they are fools and will get what they richly deserve.

Yes, just as Clinton did.

Only this time, our GOP leaders better have some real backbone, not like Dole and Newt.

Sounds a little too confident for me - the RATS are absolute MASTERS at deception. AND the RATS will keep their propaganda ministers in the Jurassic media spinning what a 'HISTORIC TIME THIS IS TO PASS SOCIALISM HEALTHCARE DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF THE FIRST ARAB-AMERICAN PRESIDENT'S TERM. Just watch - you will amazed what we hear from Jurassic media in the next two months.

My estimate, no matter how painful this is, that the man-child will sign Obamacare bill before Dec 24, 2009, with the help of all untrustworthy RATS and probably with a few 'bought-off' RINOs.

Yep, they want you to believe it’s DOA so you don’t ‘pester’ them with your irate calls, emails etc.

BINGO - they have told the media to spin this so that Tea Parties will back off.

I think that's wrong. I think HillaryCare passed the House in '93.

There's really something wrong with government when I have to root for paralysis and gridlock.

Nothing wrong with you. That's the way the system's been set up by the Founders. They made it hard to "get things done" for a reason.

You are correct, all the gyrations and back room deals they needed to pass this thing make it unsellable to the Senate IMHO.

I am not quite sure what Bam and Nancy are thinking about, they are a bit myopic in trying to force this thru. Nancy is clearly tone deaf, Bam just does not care, power and adulation are what he seeks.
