The implosion and death of the USSR was at the very least hastened by their staying way too long in Afghanistan.

I agree that putting more funds / troops in Afghanistan will harm America’s ecomony. And I sadly say that as someone who was on the ground in Afghanistan for almost six years. But BO is for anything that is bad for America.
I agree. But I think he also knows that the US has already waged a monumentally successful campaign in Afghanistan and it led to the USSR’s defeat there. Given that I strongly suspect the intentions of any advice that he might give.
Gorbachev is a washed up Communist who likes Vlad Putin and hates America. He would love to see the US leave Afghanistan dejected, and for the Russians to move back into there.
one could argue leaving is safe in the short run but then you have the taliban back and al queada back and pakistan next door with nukes

There are many people who say that Russia is supplying weapons and expertise to the Taliban, and that the neo-Soviets (and Chinese) want us to bleed there.
