The race to become Tulsa's new Mayor ended less than an hour after the polls closed Tuesday evening when Democrat Tom Adelson conceded to his Republican foe, Dewey Bartlett, Jr.
The office of the city's chief executive was up for grabs because incumbent mayor Kathy Taylor (D) announced in June that she would not run for re-election so she could concentrate on the city's financial stability.
Mark Perkins, an independent candidate, also conceded to Bartlett about 8:15 p.m. The other independent in the race, Lawrence Kirkpatrick, has not issued a statement at the time of this writing.
Bartlett, a business owner, has previously served as a Tulsa city councilor. His four-year term will begin in December.
More good news electorally.
One would wonder if Kathy Taylor(D) had anything to do to disturb the "city's financial stability"?
Sounds to me like Tulsa is relatively safe for a while....until they once again have a collective memory loss and elect a 'rat.
That’s odd. When did they start changing some of the Mayoral election schedules of these cities ? That’s the second one I’ve learned of today (the other being Camden, NJ, which on my list I thought wasn’t up until next year). Tulsa’s wasn’t supposed to be until next year as well. I try to keep meticulous track of that...
Anyway, although Tulsa is GOP-leaning, since then-Mayor Jim Inhofe left office in ‘84, we’ve only won twice, once in ‘88 (for a two-year term) and again in ‘02 (Bill LaFortune lost reelection in ‘06). Dewey Bartlett, Jr. is the namesake son of the former Governor and Senator.
I hope he cleanses Tulsa of whatever Acorn influence it may have.
I also hope the new mayor of Albuquerque does the same.
I hope Bartlett can begin to redeem the Republican party after the administration of Bill Lafortune, who is a decent guy but was in the wrong job as mayor.
Bartlett kinda reminds me of the microsoft guy in the TV commercials. :)

Well, I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but Dewey is no prize. The Republicans in Tulsa tend to be the country club variety. There are a handful of families who run the city, and they are the ones who are always thinking up new ways to spend taxpayer money. They hand a lot of it over to a group called the Metro Chamber which is always dreaming up ridiculous, expensive projects that they try to foist on the city and county. Meanwhile, the streets are horrible and the street lights are often turned off to save $. Don’t expect great things from Dewey and his pals.
Sounds like Nashville Republicans... only they back Democrats for Mayor. We haven’t had a GOP Mayor in Nashville since the first Grover Cleveland Administration (1880s).
What did he do ? I wasn’t familiar with his record.
It is awesome that Bartlett won. I received an email from someone who was still celebrating the win. Tulsa has gone back Republican which bodes well for statewide races!
This is AWESOME. Tulsa has suffered some losses with some major oil people moving out of state. Hopefully Bartlett can get it back on track.
Now we will have a Republican Mayor of Tulsa as we head into the 2010 statewide elections where most of the seats are up for election.
Bartlett will probably govern very similar to Taylor so nothing will change. He backed her twice.
I would have backed her over the previous Republican Mayor as well who was incompetent to be kind. What changes is a Republican in charge when we have statewide elections. ACORN can now hit the road in Tulsa like it did in OKC. Under Taylor it flourished.
I thought Taylor only ran once for Mayor as she didn’t seek reelection and she was only elected for her first term.
Ok freepers on this thread have nothing but bad things to say about this previous GOP Mayor.

Funny I always thought Tulsa (and OK City) were quite Republican on the local level going way back. I guess not.
Bartlett, Sr. was fairly Conservative (it was his seatmate Henry Bellmon, who like Bartlett also had served as Governor, was the one who exhibited RINO tendencies and really screwed up on voting to give away the Panama Canal - for which he opted not to run in 1980 - though his reasoning was if we didn’t turn it over, there’d be a civil war fought over it). Bartlett was also dying of lung cancer by 1978 and he was thoroughly unable to mount a reelection bid (which was won by Democrat then-Gov. David Boren), and he voted contrary to Bellmon, especially on the Panama Canal giveaway. He died 2 months after his term ended (he was only 59).
His donothing was let the city streets go to pot.
One of his crimes was paying the bills of Great Plains Airlines out of the City Coffers.
He’ll get my support if/when he turns off the lights in City Hall at night.
