Military prosecutors have charged Maj. Nadil Malik Hasan with 13 counts of premeditated murder in last weeks shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Tex., a spokesman for the Army criminal investigation division said Thursday.
Major Hasan, 39, an Army psychiatrist, is accused of opening fire with two handguns in a Soldier Medical Readiness Center, where troops receive medical attention before being deployed or after returning from overseas.
Of the 13 people who were killed, , four were officers, 8 were enlisted soldiers and one was a civilian. Major Hasan was eventually subdued by civilian police.
The 13 charges against Major Hasan are initial charges, said the Army spokesman, Chris Grey, and additional charges may be preferred in the future, subject to the ongoing criminal investigation.
It is important to remember that the preferral of charges is the first step in the court-martial process, Mr. Grey said, and that a charge is merely an accusation. The accused is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
Col. John P. Galligan, a retired Army officer, who is representing Major Hasan, has questioned whether the suspect will be able to get a fair trial at Fort Hood.
For now, Mr. Grey added, Major Hasan is currently under pretrial restriction while receiving medical care.
Major Hasan is reported to be in stable condition in an Army Hospital in San Antonio, where he is recovering from four gunshot wounds.

Just kill him now, the subhuman POS.
They need to: 1. fry bacon in his room; 2. dress his wounds with lard; 3. Shoot him at sunrise for impersonating Army personnel while murdering Army personnel.
Hasan's death sentence: Hanging
He should be charged with TREASON.
“Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.”
Article III, Section III of the U.S. Constitution.
He is a traitor and should be shot or hanged.
It should take that long or longer to adjudicate the Miserable POS!
I am 74 Y/O and will do everything in my power to live long enough to see the A$$hat gone, and I don’t mean the Muslim Major!!!!!
My fear is that Obama will pardon Hasan before leaving office even if he hasn’t been convicted yet.
I’m in no way a lawyer but I don’t think he could be pardoned prior to conviction.. IMOH
Not only can a president pardon someone for a federal crime before that person has been convicted, he could pardon him before he’s even been charged. Remember Ford’s pardon of Nixon.
Thanks for the reminder! As I said, I’m not a lawyer and old.
Obama didn’t stop John Muhammad’s execution, though some people here were sure he would out of Muslim loyalty. I think Obama will let military justice be carried out in this case. He has to think about getting re-elected after all.
P.S. Muhammed's execution was not his call.
