Hard to believe, but as a number of banks, plus two auto companies have been bailed out, look for newspapers to BEG to be bailed out also.
Even as I read this article, I sat here stunned. But as I calmed myself, I realized, I should not be surprised. Banks, investment houses, automobile companies, and now newspapers.
The state of New Hampshire last week agreed to guarantee 75 percent of a $250,000 loan from an Upper Valley bank to the new owner of the Eagle Times, an unusual deal because it involves a daily newspaper and the government it covers.
The Executive Council on Wednesday unanimously approved without debate the working capital loan guarantee, which would be administered by the New Hampshire Business Finance Authority.

Oh G-d. What has happened to this country? How has this been allowed to happen? And more importantly how can we reverse all of this and make sure it never happens again?
Abraham Lincoln is on record saying (pretty poetically) that a vigorous and free press is a better defender of democracy than a huge military.
Too little too late, bucko. You’re screwed. And your kids too.
It’s not enough that the newspapers have pretty much lost all credibility with 75% of the people. They have now decided that they ought to be officially owned by the government.
Next they’ll be bailing out the Taliban and Al Qaeda.
Iran will be third.
1st Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
How can one have freedom of the press if the press is dependent on government-guaranteed loans?
Freedom: A right or the power to engage in certain actions without control or interference—the condition of being free of restraints.
Couldn’t these loans be considered unconstitutional in that it’s impossible to be both independent of government control/restraints while being dependent on government for financing?

My opinion: if the money used by NH isn’t federal money...then this is a state decision.
Frankly, I would be outraged if MY STATE GOVERNMENT decided to guarantee a media outlet. Both would be sullied.
But if this is what the people of New Hampshire will tolerate, then let ‘em wallow in their ignorance.
Same goes for the lunatics who keep re-electing Barney Frank, Maxine Waters, Dennis Kucinich and Chuck Schumer. They get the people they deserve. :)
At the rate newspapers are going, they are going the way of the buggy whip factory. At least they should, in a truly free capitalist marketplace. However it’s not just technology (i.e. the internet) that is doing the newspapers in, it is more so blindly shilling for the far left liberals, and the marketplace does not want to buy the product.
So Zero bails out the newspapers (will I hear a “too big to fail” excuse?). Any bets on “ideological purity” requirements? In the future will I be quizzed on the praises to the Dear Leader in the Moonbatapolis Star and Sickle?
This just makes it official that the press is in the back pocket of our government—kind of like the old Soviet Union.

Unfortunately, they inflict these morons on the rest of us. :-(
I see it. It is a state fund loan. Any connections to the stimulus money?
“A bailout only Hugo Chavez would LOVE.”
And the current occupant of The Oval Office.
