HARTFORD, Conn. -- Firefighter Mike Di’Giacomo said his SUV is banned from in the firehouse because the bumper stickers he has on it, displays his political views. Di’Giacomo said he has never run into a problem like this in the 10 years he has been with the department.

I like those particular bumper stickers but even in this rural area (union rich) I wouldn’t put them on. Our car would be vandalized and keyed from one end to another and guarding it with a shotgun while in town wouldn’t fly.

One thing I have learned over time is that the concepts covered by our First Amendment are very, very difficult. I used to think they were so straightforward -- freedom of religious expression and freedom of speech. Very simple. Means what it says. No discussion necessary.

Now I just can't see it that way. If I'm a cashier at a store and I harangue every shopper about the evils of Obama, my employer has a right to fire me. I'm crazy if I think that can't happen.

Is there is a Death Cult religion running around preaching violence, shooting people, and chopping heads off, the government really ought to outlaw it, seize the religious buildings, and sell them on the open market. Our society would be crazy to tolerate a religion which will not tolerate us and has as its goal ourt destruction or enslavement.

Although I still like the basic ideas of the First Amendment, I spend a lot of time thinking about it nowadays and I just wish I lived in a world where a simplistic view sufficed.

In this case, the employer is the government. The first amendment applies to the government but not private employers.

Well, I know. But then I think of Maj. Hasan, a government employee, who apparently told US soldiers that thet were wrong, and evil, and that Muslims were the good guys and would triumph (or some such rot).

Does the government have standing to say "We won't put up with that crap"? or does the First Amendment prevent the government from banning "incorrect" speech?
