American squeamishness about talking about sex has helped keep common sexually transmitted infections far too common, especially among vulnerable teens, U.S. researchers reported Monday.
Latest statistics on chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis show the three highly treatable infections continue to spread in the United States.
"Chlamydia and gonorrhea are stable at unacceptably high levels and syphilis is resurgent after almost being eliminated," said John Douglas, director of the division of sexually transmitted diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"We have among the highest rates of STDs of any developed country in the world," Douglas added in a telephone interview.
The administration of President Barack Obama has signaled a willingness to move away from so-called abstinence-only sex education approaches promoted by his predecessor, George W. Bush, and conservative state and local governments.
Several studies have shown such approaches do not work well and that it is better to encourage abstinence while also offering children and teens information about how to protect themselves from diseases as well as pregnancy.
"We haven't been promoting the full battery of messages," Douglas said. "We have been sending people out with one seatbelt in the whole car."

Didn't take long before the republic was convinced the disease belonged to all of us, homo or otherwise. And of course enormous amounts of fed $$ were steered to "finding a cure" when in fact even those with a partial lobotomy knew the solution was abstinence.
Same thing happened with weapons.

I agree completely. There may be a lot of reasons for this but reticence isn't one of them.
Promiscuity raises risk of infection to scarcely believable levels no matter what population practices it. The smaller the population, the more true that is. Has anyone played one of those entertaining zombie simulators like this one? It isn't a joke - this is exactly what an untreated disease outbreak looks like.
Gay men alone can skew abstinence ed statistics to make it look less effective. Isn't it crazy how criticism of their self-destructive lifestyle has been made to look like some weird religious quirk?
Ever notice how scientists who recommend people "limit sexual partners" never translate it to recommend "lifelong monogamy with no fornication"?
So many people have bought the lies of our licentious culture and are paying the price with their health and their lives. For every slur you might say, add ten prayers for them.

I was shocked when I came across this idea. We have come from the belief that sex is something powerful that must be restrained to sex is a right that shouldn't be contained.
I have heard that the reason Republicans are considered "anti-woman" is because of the conservative value of sex being within marriage. I believe the quote was "it only makes sense if they [Republicans] are against women having orgasms."
I think they should have to pay huge fines for healthcare due to risky and nasty behavior.
The “squeamishness” seems to be about realistically discussing the consequences of sex, at least in popular culture - movies, tv, music. (Nobody pays attention to what they’re taught in school, naturally enough.)

And, we know from the promotion of condoms in Africa and the UK. Only Uganda, which has promoted abstinence and monogamy, has seen a significant drop in AIDS in the continent.
Condoms have done nothing to slow the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Teen STDs and abortion are at an all-time high in the UK as the government continues to use condoms as a primary strategy in public schools to stop teen STDs.
The real question is, are liberals are stupid enough to believe condoms can solve the problem or do they know it won't and want to take advantage of the problems caused by the spread of STDs?
Planned Parenthood makes money when birth control techniques fail. Encouraging irresponsible teens to have sex is good for bidness.
And what’s an abortion cost these days? Are these 13 year old girls resourceful enough to pay for one without notifying their parents or is their Sugar Daddy giving them the money to make it go away?
What’s “funny” is that Barack says you MUST carry health insurance because you could get hit by a bus. Seems that if you get hit by a bus, you probably have a good case to levy against the city.
When are we going to REQUIRE homeowners to carry fire insurance and hurricane insurance and flood insurance? I’m sick of every national tragedy requiring a federal bailout.
