A federal appeals court has ordered a civil rights lawyer convicted in a terrorism case that originated in Minnesota to begin serving her prison sentence.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan today also upheld Lynne Stewart's conviction, which was based in part on illegally aiding her client, Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, during a visit with him at the federal prison in Rochester, Minn., in May 2000.

She was convicted of smuggling messages between Abdel-Rahman and a terrorist group.

Stewart was sentenced to a little more than two years in prison.

Lynne Stewart and Michael Ratner are beginning a West Coast Tour this Friday night, February 23, at the Women’s Building in San Francisco. The tour is a joint benefit for the Lynne Stewart Defense Committee and the Mobilization to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Michael Ratner is also a renowned attorney. He is president of the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), an organization that has helped lead the fight against the massive repression unleashed in the wake of 9/11.

A list of Stewart’s clients over the years tells the tale. They have included, among others, members of the Black Panthers, participants in the 1971 Attica prison uprising, and Puerto Rican independence fighters. Her conviction arises from her legal defense of the “blind Shiek” Omar Abdel Rachman, now serving a life sentence for “seditious conspiracy,” a prosecution which grew out of investigations of the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993.

Obama should prosecute Bush officials who designed torture policy
By Michael Ratner, December 3, 2008

One of Barack Obama’s first acts as president should be to instruct his attorney general to appoint an independent prosecutor to initiate a criminal investigation of former Bush Administration officials who gave the green light to torture.

Radical attorney, supporter of terrorists and cop-killers, backs Obama

Michael Ratner, head of the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) in New York, has a decades-long record of defending and litigating on behalf of terrorists and cop-killers.

CCR has worked on behalf of the Weather Underground, the terrorist group made famous by Obama supporters Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.

Ratner and/or his organization have provided legal support to:

The convicted murderer of two FBI agents;
The convicted murderer of a Georgia deputy sheriff;
The convicted murderer of a Philadelphia police officer;
The convicted murderer of a New Jersey state trooper;
The convicted murderer of a New York City police officer;
Convicted terrorists who planted more than 100 bombs in Chicago and New York;
One of the convicted masterminds of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing in New York;
The convicted bomber of a New York synagogue;
A terrorist working for Libya’s Muammar Qaddafi (who himself has endorsed Obama);
And much more.
Ratner now supports Barack Obama.

Ratner is also an open supporter of Cuba’s Fidel Castro (who has heaped praise on Obama as his favorite candidate for president of the United States)

Ratner has a long record of aiding and abetting terrorists through providing legal support to spring terrorists out of prison, obstruct their convictions, file appeals on their behalf.

“CCR leader Michael Ratner went to the U.S. Supreme Court to get constitutional protections extended to captured terrorists and illegal combatants. He sued to weaken post-9/11 counterterrorism laws.

“He’s also an aggressive propagandist of the Soviet old school who knows how to make headlines to spin public opinion. Where he once pushed communist causes, today he’s pushing Islamist extremism.”

“They gave legal support to Abdul Majid and Bashir Hameed, now in prison for snuffing the life from New York City Police Officer John Scarangella and attempting to kill his partner. They provided legal counsel for Joanne Chesimard, convicted of murdering New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster and now hiding in Cuba.

“They provided legal and political support to Lynne Stewart, the lawyer convicted of providing ‘material support’ to Omar Abdel-Rahman, the ‘Blind Sheik’ who was behind the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center in New York and was considered a spiritual leader to Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda.

“The CCR’s Ratner has gone to the mat for Stewart, even after her conviction for supporting terror.”

Ratner signed a public letter of support for Obama’s candidacy, dated January 28, 2008, and placed online on a blog called Habeas Lawyers for Obama. The point of contact for the blog is Gary A. Isaac, whose telephone number, 312-701-7025, appears on the blog.

The letter also appears on Democrats.com and the Wall Street Journal website. The signers of the letter say they “have been deeply involved” in litigation in defense of terrorist detainees at Guantanamo. Twice they urge support for Obama. They say they are defending the terrorists in order to defend habeas corpus. That might be true for many of the signers, but with Ratner’s documented support for terrorists going back to the time Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn were throwing bombs, it’s clear that habeas corpus isn’t the only thing Obama’s lawyer-backer is trying to protect.

If Helen Thomas was smart, she'd be seen as much as possible in the presence of Lynne Stewart.

Fuglynne Stewart is probably the only person who could make Helen look good by comparison.

Good Lord in heaven, that almost makes Helen Thomas look good. I’ve heard she has no personal hygiene (which you can tell my the stringy hair and nice beard), and that she smells like an open sewer. Disgusting.

Put her in the men's cell block ...? /sarc>

Was this a misdemeanor or a felony?

Will she be automatically disbarred...?

Cheers!

The smell of the prison just when up 1000%. Stewart is a stinky old red, and a psychotic one at that (In order to be a hardcore communist, you have to be psychotic, delusional, living in a state of denial, and smell like warm dog crap).

To #9: Please, I haven’t had dinner yet, and after seeing Stewart’s face, I think I’ll skip it, for a week.

Where the hell was she during Halloween? At the White House?

She’ll probably end up on KSM’s defense team.

Stewart had been disbarred, and thus would not be eligible to be part of KSM's defense team, as it stands right now. However, one suppose that could change, in this toxic environment...
