Purple Hearts proposed for Fort Hood victims

Washington (CNN) -- Military victims of the Fort Hood massacre will be eligible to receive the Purple Heart if Congress passes a bill introduced Tuesday.

Non-military victims could receive the Secretary of Defense Medal of Freedom -- the civilian equivalent of the Purple Heart. Both military and civilian personnel killed or wounded in the November 5 attack would be granted the same legal status as combatant casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The bill was introduced by Texas GOP Rep. John Carter, who represents Fort Hood in the House of Representatives.

I sent him a thank you note, but I had to find an address because I’m way out of his district.

I think this will, on its face, make this an act of war (terror) rather than a crime....unless the RATs in congress decide to make a Purple Heart signify anything they want it to...just because they can.

Was it necessary to pass such a Bill for the victims at The Pentagon on 9/11....or for those killed or wounded at Pearl Harbor?

That’s a scary thought.

They are so deranged that before it’s over they might give Hasan a Purple Heart.

I don’t like the idea. Do service members who are killed by illegal immigrants on welfare get a purple heart?

I think the Purple Heart should be restricted to injuries sustained on the battlefield.

I'm no artist but somebody with some photo-shop "skilz" (as the kids say) should whip up a Victim of Diversity medal.

Suggestions:
A skull and bones with a rainbow background?
A tombstone with rainbow triangle?

ehh...that's it but you guys get the idea.

You aren’t.

Makes sense. Didn’t military personnel injured during the Pearl Harbor attack receive purple hearts?

IMO, Hasan brought the battlefield right to Fort Hood.

Maybe this proposal will bring about an honest discussion about this issue instead of all the PC crap they’re shoveling around right now.

Full Disclosure ... I am a Purple Heart receipiant from Desert Storm ... and I disagree with these soldiers receiving the PH. It is a big stretch the fit this into a combat related situation and I think it begins to lessen the true value and meaning.
I fully believe that the POS should be lined up against a wall but PHs for the victims I think not.

I hear what you are saying but the war we are in does not have front lines, the enemy is here as well as Europe, Philippines, Middle East, etc.

Thank you for responding, LavaDog.

I was wondering what someone like you would say about this.

I can see your point.

I also think it’s a good thing that Carter is doing. Even if it is “playing politics”-it may force an honest discussion.

The PC stuff is going to kill us.

and I hear and agree with what you said ... and I spent the last 8 yrs of my career fighting it but the military were the only ones fighting a war. If we are going to give thses soldiers PHs then we as a nation need to stop half-a$$ing this ... declare war as a nation and “lets Roll” until then this type of gesture is fluff and is done to make politicians feel better about themselves. Another point, 8 yrs of “war” and we haven’t had one live MOH winner? That is a travesty too. Thanks for the good discussion

“I think the Purple Heart should be restricted to injuries sustained on the battlefield.”

The problem with asymetric warfare is there is no “battlefield.”

Probably 1/2 the casualties are what used to be in positions I would dismiss as a REMF.

If they get the Purple Heart, that means they were wounded in combat. If they were wounded in combat, psycho-doc was an enemy combatant, not a psycho-doc. If Obambi vetos the Purple Heart bill, he looks like crap. If he signs it, there was a terrorist attack on US soil, and he looks worse. Obama: Is there some way I can vote “present”?

I predict he will neither sign it or veto it, and the bill will lapse into law after the constitutional time period passes.

” I disagree with these soldiers receiving the PH. It is a big stretch the fit this into a combat related situation.”

Not sure how this is any different than the turd who threw the grenade into the tent. Didn’t they get PHs?

Yes, this is RE, but, as posted above, in asymetric warfare probably 1/2 of the casualties are non-combat personel -— REMFs sitting in an office or loading a truck or somesuch when a bomb goes off.

Thinking back to Desert Storm (which I was also in), I think most of the deaths were Marines sleeping in a barracks somewhere hit by a SCUD, wasn’t it?

We wouldn’t hestate to give PHs to office jocks in the Green Zone if Dr. Hasan when crazy there — so I am not sure what difference it being Texas makes.
