Posted on 11/19/2009 12:15:02 PM PST by St. Louis Conservative
Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani has decided not to run for governor next year - but will run for U.S. Senate instead, sources told the Daily News.
A source familiar with Giuliani's thinking said the failed presidential candidate has been telling people he plans to run against Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in 2010 to fill out the remaining two years of Hillary Clinton's term.
If elected, the source said, he could use that as a stepping stone to run for President in 2012 - rather than run for re-election to the Senate.
A Giuliani spokeswoman downplayed the reports. "Rudy has a history of making up his own mind and has no problem speaking it," she said. "When Mayor Giuliani makes a decision about serving in public office, he will inform New Yorkers on his own."
His absence from the governor's race would be a boon -- and a bow -- to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who is considering a run for the office.
Gov. Paterson, who trails Cuomo by up to points in a hypothetical matchup in some polls, insists he is running, even though the White House has pointedly told him President Obama would "prefer" he didn't.
Former Staten Island Borough President Guy Molinari, a close Giuliani pal, said the former mayor had been privately sharing doubts with him for months about running for governor.

This is great news. Assuming Rudy can put together a coherent message on social issues, hed be a great candidate in 2012.
There were only two people last election cycle that made the American Left stark-raving mad. (Yes, I know theyre stark-raving mad every day, but waaaaaaaay more than usual.)
Those two people were Sarah Palin and Rudy Guiliani. I suspect it will continue to be those two into 2012.
We've got our share of RINOs in high office here in Texas too. He'd have a better shot than you might think.
IDEAL candidate is another matter.
I took lots of heat last year when I supported Rudy, and I don't regret it, but I truly see him as more of an executive (Governor, President, Mayor, etc).
Good luck to him, he is one of the good guys when it comes to the War on Terror!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To me, it’s six of one, half dozen of the other, since I live so far away from this race, but if Rudy does wanna run, I’d get in his corner. It is as we have said — “closest conservative New York would ever really vote for,” Hoffman notwithstanding.
A big YEAH BABY!!!
YES!!!!! That bimbo was my Congresswoman in the 20th and then was appointed to the Senate! She is terrible!! Go Rudy Go!!!!
If the man can do for NY State what he did for NY City?
Much of New York overall w/could become quite a different place to live.
Which is nothing BUT good news for those Conservatives now stuck there because they can't find employment out of state, or sell their home if they can.
Would bode well for the national GOP, too.
I know when Gillibrand was appointed to fill this seat she had had nearly a perfect voting record on the 2nd according to the NRA. Has she continued to be a strong proponent of the RKBA?
“Hes got my vote!!! Oops, I vote in Florida.”
Did you ever vote in NY? Request an absentee ballot and see what happens! (j/k...barely)
Rudy would be much better than Arlen Specter, not to worry.
He helped Chris Christie also in New Jersey.
It’s good news. This is a New York Senator seat. Let’s break up Schumer’s party.
The only thing worse then a liberal Democrat, is a liberal Republican. No more RINOs!
Sometimes I wonder if I’m even on a conservative website around here any more. This thread is one of those times.
I wish he’d stay in the Senate, if elected.
There is no way that I’d vote for Mr. Giuliani for president. Ever.
That’s a GOP pick-up; you can write it in ink!!!!!!
He’d make a great intra-party VP pick for GOP nominee Palin, too.................. ;-)
We need to focus on Skumer after Gillibrand is gone. Well, actually we’ll probably have to find two since the unexpired term he is running for against her is only two years then Skumer will be up for relection then.
Senator Giuliani would be a fantastic veep for Palin. The two years in the senate would be just about perfect for that.
Run Rudy Run!! Would prefer a Conservative, but he does have alot of Fiscal Conservatism and can be dragged to the Right.
Pray for America’s Freedom
You’re not the only one.
Just met a poster who thinks Rudy would be better then Palin.
Electing liberals will not advance conservatism.
Hope we don’t have to sharpen all the long knives again...
BTW.... you must admit that if Rudy was the candidate, he would have had a much better showing than McCain. I also know that if Rudy was President today, there would be no way in Hell that Kalid Sheik Muhammad would be on his way to a court room in New York City. We would also have the troops we need in Afghanistan, and a whole bunch more.
As long as it keeps him away from POTUS 2012 I’m all for it.
In theory you’re right. I just don’t think Pataki has the appeal to win the senate in NY, so I’m okay with Rudy taking it.
Rudy is both a Fiscal Conservative and strong on National Defense and understands first hand we have to win the war on IslamOfascists.
Only the anti war, big spenders would be against Rudy
I would support his run and re-election runs for the Senate. He has the best chance to win and promote conservatism (such as it is) in New York.
I would oppose his run for the Presidency. He’s the worst Republican we could get for Conservatism in the U.S.
Just when we were starting to get the FReepathons back under two months. Would FR survive another Rudyite purge?
But I disagree. Giuliani's speaking talent is more suited to the Senate, and would be more effective there, especially now with CSPAN and YouTube. I want him there, speaking and voting on important national issues, not in that backwater upstate.
Rudy seems OK even though socially liberal like most of NY. He'd make a good attorney general if he remained conservative.
Did he really come out against guns at one point? I haven't heard about that. That would be bad.
Pray for America's Freedom
LOL Don't push it!
Seriously, as an original member of last year's “Stop Rudy” ping list, I am very, very glad he's running for this seat. He will WIN, and he will be worlds better at voting on defense, tax, and spending issues than any NY Democrat. The Senate is a great place for Rudy, especially as a NY Senator.
Dare I say, a win would also make him a front-runner for a VP nomination under Sarah Palin in 2012? Dare I say “cross-party outreach from the other side for once?”
My motto (For immediate release to the PRESS):
Why? Cause F*ck you MSM, that's why!
Rudy’s no conservative, but he’s fairly libertarian - and that’s okay with me.
I’m a fan of Rudy and I hope he does well in this election.
Giuliani's position on the WOT is no different then Joe Lieberman's but I wouldn't vote for Joe anymore then I'd vote for Rudy. Any politico who can't bring themselves to defend the most vulnerable and innocent in our society -— the unborn -— doesn't deserve to be elected dog catcher. Making the Giuliani versus McCain comparison is a red herring. Hate McCain if you like. Just don't think for a minute that using his record makes Giuliani look better. Its dosen't!
Oh, don't do that. There's lots to support in Rudy (certainly not everything) and that would just be counterproductive. He has a sharp political mind that comes down on the right side quite a bit but is socially a New Yorker.
“My motto (For immediate release to the PRESS):
Why? Cause F*ck you MSM, that’s why!”
I love that motto and I could take that ticket in either order.
A more fiscally conservative Lieberman, if you will...
I would vote for Rudy over Hillary. Yes, he should have ran against her. I would also vote for Rudy over Dems. But I am no fan of his.
Can Pataki run for NY Gov. again? He served two previous terms, but so did Jerry Brown in CA, who’ll probably run again.
He definitely has RINO blood, but I can’t imagine him supporting Obamacare, or Cap and Tax...
Rudy is not exactly a gun grabber. Is realistic.
May not agree with a few of his domestic views but we don’t
have tht luxury now, if we don’t win the war, the rest is all moot.
In a February 2007 Sean Hannity interview, he said that “[The right to carry a handgun] is part of the Constitution. People have a right to bear arms,” and that while tough gun-control laws were needed in New York City, “in another place, more rural, more suburban ... you have a different set of rules
Giuliani has also stated that decisions regarding concealed carry laws should be left to the states.
OH MONK get in here sweetie
OH MONK get in here sweetie
“No, I’d vote for whoever the Conservative party ran. “
Conservative Party will nominate Guliani so guess the question is moot.
What Republican would you support to run for the senate in 2010 in New York? Someone that can win statewide. I’m curious to know.
I am aware of this sentiment on FR. I am not interested in fighting about him, he belongs to NY. Today is the first day that I heard something about some opposition to guns. I don't like the sound of that. Having lived in "hollywood" I don't get too upset about his cross-dressing SNL-type sense of humor. I don't know where he is on abortion.
SO, there's my full take on Rudy. I'd be interested in what you know especially about his position on guns.
If this is the worst then I have little problem with that. If you declare urban new york city as a war zone then in LIMITED ways I could see a TEMPORARY crackdown in SPECIFIC neighborhoods to basically allow cops to arrest the bad guys in those areas but this is really stretching the constitution as far as I could possibly go.
I like how Rudy fights intellectually. He is a prosecutor and a warrior. He is also a goofball at times. I kinda like him though maybe not for POTUS. It would depend on the opposition candidate.
Thanks for the info.
It’s come to this: Rudy - the knight in shining armor.
At this point the ony person I’d vote for for governor or senator is a guy in NY’s 23rd who is bucking all of them and is not finished fighting!
