Optimistic GOP Governors Want a Kinder, Gentler Approach to 2010
Politics Daily ^ | Nov. 20, 2009 | Melinda Henneberger

AUSTIN – Here's what I did not hear at the annual confab of Republican governors held here this week: The words socialist, extremist, or government takeover. With the focus on jobs, jobs and jobs, the only red meat was the Texas barbecue. And by design, there was no Obama-bashing.

[snip]

Barbour cautioned Republican candidates to refrain from attacking the president, period: "People want the president to succeed; good Lord, they want the country to succeed, and particularly the first African-American president has a lot of goodwill. . . . We need to be careful, we need to treat the president respectfully, we need to make this about policies, not personal. . . . This is a guy people like.''

and particularly the first African-American president has a lot of goodwill

Does anybody here comprehend that sentence?

Because I don't. Why should his race engender good will? Or bad will?

Who IS he? What does he want to DO? What has he DONE?

Concentrate on those things, Governor Barbour.

The Republican Party is the minority party, the opposition party — it better start fighting Obama and his policies. McCain lost by being too polite. Obama is destroying the country with leftism, and it is not racist to say it. No matter what the liberal elites will say, I have to think that the bulk of the American people will not buy what the race-mongers dish out.

Barbour: "We need to be careful, we need to treat the president respectfully, we need to make this about policies, not personal."

Isn't Barbour referring to the same president who said, “Does anybody think that the teabag, anti-government people are going to support them if they bring down health care? ... and it will encourage the extremists.”

Yes, let's all be respectful now.

"the party with the angriest base will have the greater turnout, and thus will win"

Thus, the GOP campaign strategy was to inflame the base.

I don’t see the people doing a damn thing about it either.
Tea Parties and Town Halls didn’t make a dent and were basically laughed at . We are ignoring our DUTY to this country . The more we wait to act the less our chances of sucess. Nov 2012..??That’s a joke . There won’t be anything left to save by then ..

Mark my words.

You're welcome, friend.

The original American revolutionaries faced much worse odds, and a much more dangerous foe than we do, but they faced it squarely, and won.

We must not let them, or our descendants down. This is our moment to fight for freedom. Stand firm. You have allies everywhere.

“we need to treat the president respectfully”

why?
when has he been respectful to conservatives? when has he been respectful to ‘we the people’ who pay the taxes that he spreads to the dead beats who refuse to get a job? when has he been respectful to america? if he ever does all of those things, then and only then will i treat him with even an ounce of respect. until that time, i will call him barky oblabo and jeer his stupidity, cheer his failures, and pray for his removal from the position he is not qualified to hold.

Ditto to your post...we cannot wait for more Americans to become dependent on gov, or go to work for gov.

BTW, when did Haley ever defend GWB this way?

But vicious attacks on Sarah (wishing that she gets raped by black men in New York City, public jokes about a professsional athlete in his 30's getting her 14-year-old daughter pregnant, T-shirts that "Sarah is a C**T") are all great.

Screw the GOP.

Why? So the vote will be split among the right and the Dems will win? If conservatives want a party, they need to take back the Republican party. If we can’t do that, then there is no hope in a third party.
