PHOENIX -- A new statewide poll suggests John McCain could get a fight in his bid for another term in the U.S. Senate.
And it would come from his own party. A telephone survey of 570 likely Republican primary voters conducted by Rasmussen Reports found McCain the favorite of 45 percent of those questioned. But former Congressman and current radio talk show host J.D. Hayworth was backed by 43 percent, well within the 4 percentage point margin of error for the poll.
Hayworth told Capitol Media Services late Friday he has not made a decision, saying he is in the "due diligence" phase. But he said the poll results have gotten his attention.
"If the scale was down at 2 this morning before we got a certain phone call (about the survey), I would say that due diligence is now at 9.5," Hayworth said.
(snip)
But Hayworth said McCain's big warchest will not be the same advantage in 2010 that it might have been at one time. He said the increasing use of the Internet, including blogs and social media, may make it easier for a candidate with limited funds to get exposure.
And he clearly already is looking for ways to make McCain's cash an issue, saying it "clearly is a large sum of money for a leading proponent of campaign finance reform."
(snip)
Pollster Fred Solop of the Social Research Laboratory at Northern Arizona University said Hayworth's numbers are not surprising. He said many Republicans do not like McCain.
"They clearly are looking for alternatives," he said.
(snip)
Younger Republicans voters like Hayworth more than their older ones. He also had the backing of a plurality of Republicans who call themselves conservatives, while McCain had a comfortable lead among liberal and moderate Republicans.

Sarah will endorse McCain and put him over the top.
Newbie, since you've only been here for eighteen days, I'll be happy to enlighten you as to why McCain is NOT a Republican. (Furthermore, I'll be happy to print out receipts from the FEC database showing my generous contribution (as a student) to Michele Bachmann's 2008 campaign. I'll also be happy to print out receipts showing my contributions to Doug Hoffman and other conservative Republicans. I'll also be happy to provide links to threads where I have praised many conservative Republicans.)
However, it wouldn't do any good, seeing as you favor amnesty for illegals.
Quote (yesterday):
Thats defeatist nonsense. Once legalized, they will become more likely to vote Republican.

Now, newbie and McCainiac groin leech, let me make it very clear to you that FR is a conservative Web site, not a RINO watering hole. We do not defend or apologize liberal or "moderate" Republicans, opportunists, traitors, douche bags, and treasonous bastards like McCain. And, frankly, it might do you well to learn that, otherwise your stay here will be very...very...short.
I hope that happens after the primary, and only if McCain wins it.
Please Arazonans, throw this old RINO clown out with the trash cause that is what he is.
Go J.D.!
Hildy, I agree. I’d like to see him in now. Sadly, I’m thinking he has decided to take a pass. His delay in announcing this, makes it just that much harder to get another person to jump in. He needs to declare one way or the other.
I hope he jumps in.
There is a difference between republicans & Conservatives.
If you don’t recognize that you are part of the problem.
RabScuttle385 and others on this forum are very critical of John McCain for a reason. He isn’t one of us. You see it as RabScuttle385 trashing a Republican(R), and we see it as him trashing a Republican(D).
John’s history goes back a long ways, unfortunately for John, most of it on the record. Here’s a link that will help you understand where we’re coming from.

I developed this list last year before the election. It brings up issues that prevented me from voting for him. I will never cast a vote for a man as vile as McCain.
If the party continues to loft this type of individual, it will continue to lose my vote.
I agree with you. And NO, nothing would ever get me to vote for John. If I wouldn’t do it in 2008, I won’t do it any other time.
I don’t live in Arizona, but there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that I will ever cast a vote for him.
How much are the RINO’s paying you at the RNC? Maybe we will double it for you to keep quiet ;-)
C’mon J.D. lets drive the RINO’s out of the Congress before its too late.
“Thanks for the ping Rabs, if J.D. Hayworth is as shrewd a campaigner as I think he is, he should blanket the Arizona airwaves with McCain’s infamous “We have nothing to fear from an 0bama Administration” quote, while citing America’s weakening position in the world, record unemployment, 0bama’s antics, etc., with the kicker line “Isn’t it time that Arizona elected a REPUBLICAN to the Senate to replace John McCain?” “
I am sending this idea to JD. It is that good.
Hayworth could win this thing!!! AWESOME!
McPain is in her past, move on, no comment, either way the media will spin it against Sarah.
If J.D. runs against McCain, I will definitely be sending him some of my hard earned money. It would be worth it to get a one more real conservative in the US Senate. And I live in CA.
This is the third thread I have had to say this on: SARAH PALIN's PAC ALREADY GAVE $5K TO THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN, along with contributions to some conservatives and to Lindsay Graham & Orin Hatch.
Sarah Palin also has McCain former foreign policy advisor, Randy Scheunemann, advising her.
We may hate McCain, but Sarah clearly doesn't.
Dam, I want my Sarahpac money back. I love Sarah but I HATE McLame!
Send this "classic" McCain quote to him too.
"I think the Democratic Party is a fine party, and I have no problems with it, in their views and their philosophy."
U.S. SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, 02 APR. 2004
If you don’t know that he cheated on his 1st wife, I won’t even try .....
If you didn’t know that, you’ve been living in a cave for the last 30 years.
