So, if Vince Flynn comes to a military post, he should be similarly restricted. After all, both Flynn & Palin are private citizens hocking their wares.

AAFES has the absolute worse selection of books anywhere! If you want another book about Obama, your in the right place, conservative writers... head to Books a Million or Amazon! I don’t even bother to look at the book section anymore.

Of course if Sarah were to come to Robins, I would buy a second copy!

Then why no personal notes in the books for each person? Is that political too?

On this one, I’m siding with the Army. No political speeches on military bases. None.

I guess Lincoln didn't get that memo when he gave his speach at Gettysburg.

''The truth ... on base or off base, in uniform there IS no freedom of speech. God help a sailor or airman if he voice his views publicly, particularly in a forum that will reach others. It falls unders UCMJ .... penetration however slight ...."

The military individual lives under dictatorship to protect and preserve the rights of American’s under the Constitution. It is why the Oath is taken upon enlisting or commissioning and is taken seriously.

If this is true how did the military Jihads give speeches and such contrary to upholding our Constitution and get away with it?

You make a good point. I hadn’t thought about the sales permit aspect of it. Although I do remember wandering the aisles and hallways of PX complexes and seeing sales reps for different products....encyclopedias come to mind...that did require the special permit.

I wonder, though, if one would need a special permit to represent a book that would already be on sale at the PX bookstore in the first place. The bookstore’s already there. The book is already there. It’s not like the encyclopedias, a real sales pressure type offering that is not normally carried by the PX.

It’s more like the lady from Kraft foods in the chip dip section of the commissary offering tastes of the product to get you to buy what’s already there. I’m betting that lady doesn’t need the special permit.

Honestly, on reflection I can’t think of a good reason to deny speaking in North Carolina if she can speak in Alaska. As someone said earlier, though, she doesn’t seem to mind this, so why should I?

I’m not a Palin-bot in any case.

“On this one, I’m siding with the Army. No political speeches on military bases. None.”

If that’s the case, then little barry 0bama needs to stop making political speeches on military bases too.

At least the troops would enjoy listening to Governor Palin speak as opposed to having that empty suit 0bama spew his canned crap.

So what, exactly, does personalizing her inscription in the books have to do with politics? This is BS. She should singn the books off-post and really lay it on thick. Hate to say it but...Never trust anybody over O-6.

“I guess Lincoln didn’t get that memo when he gave his speach at Gettysburg.”

I get that, but once it starts, especially with the political “class” at work in this country today, you’ve opened a Pandora’s box that’ll never be closed.

“But ... no photos, no personalized notes when she signs the books? What do they think she’s going to write, “Vote for me”?

The Army looks like it’s scared of retribution from Barack Obama.”

Was that the guidance? As I understand it, it was just no speech. If they barred her from personalized notes and pics, that’s over the top.

Simple ... the military is only as strong as the culture that recognizes its real purpose ... preserving freedom. I finally bailed right before Pres Reagan took office with 12 years in.

That Dimwit Caatuh and his henchmen had already started “neutering” the military. Morale was at an all time low, discipline (in the Navy) thanks to Zumwalt (sarcasm) was being dismantled. I did 4 years in the reserves on top of the 12 when Reagan took the presidency .. there was a slight shift back, but by that time the political correct crowd had wreaked its havoc.

Although I have no actual experience with But boi Clintooon .. those shipmates remainig related that they should have bailed when I did ... the last of the downward spiral was in process.

And so today you have Senior commanders that must be more poitically corret than to be be strategists. People like Powell and Clark are the products of that environment. While Swratzkopff and Tommy Franks were in the war college, the Politico REMF’s prima donnas were maneuvering at all the oh so correct diplomacy and I’m ok your Ok seminars. Places wehre senior flag ranks see and are seen.

Wooden ships and Iron men ... hate to sound like an old timer .. but reality is a bitter pill once politcal correctnes takes precedence.

30 years ago that base commander at Fort Hood and his entire command structure would already be in the midst of a court martial and a career ending process. Not today .. the CO and his Commandant will more than likely be given medals for being so “understanding”

Can’t even personalize the book inscriptions?!? WTF!!! This is not protocol! This is muzzling! For shame, for shame, for shame. With COs giving ridiculously partisan orders like that, it’s a lot easier to understand how Major Hasan happened. I guess “someone” is bucking for a promotion from the One. I guess Larry Sinclair’s replacement has been picked.

Some of you on here are getting more thin skinned by the day when it comes to Palin.

You are not allowed as a candidate to give speeches on military installations.

Palin is not a candidate, and doesn't seem to want to make a speech at her book signings.

The thin skinned ones I see on this thread are assuming much about this situation that is just straw men.

And distorting the guidelines put out by those in charge of the base.

...Obama was not allowed to do a photo op at Ramstein Hospital so he didn’t go visit the troops
Yup, if he can't get political capital from our fine military they are of no use to him.

Why Obama snubbed the troops: no photo op allowed

NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube get the skinny on the abrupt cancellation of Barack Obama’s visit to Landstuhl and Ramstein yesterday.  The campaign tried to excuse it by claiming that it wouldn’t be appropriate to visit while on a campaign-funded portion of his trip, but that wasn’t the real problem.  When Obama found out he couldn’t use the visit as a photo op, he canceled:

One military official who was working on the Obama visit said because political candidates are prohibited from using military installations as campaign backdrops, Obama’s representatives were told, “he could only bring two or three of his Senate staff member, no campaign officials or workers.” In addition, “Obama could not bring any media. Only military photographers would be permitted to record Obama’s visit.”

The official said “We didn’t know why” the request to visit the wounded troops was withdrawn. “He (Obama) was more than welcome. We were all ready for him.”

In fact, those same rules applied for the CODEL trip to Iraq and Afghanistan. They serve to keep politicians from exploiting military facilities for political reasons, and to ensure that all visitors get treated fairly. Andrea Mitchell, also of NBC, complained of this very issue during the earlier visits with the troops when she told Chris Matthews that the media couldn’t get access to Obama when visiting troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This makes the decision track very clear.  Obama and his team set up the visits to military installations before going overseas.  After seeing how the media got excluded in Iraq and Afghanistan, they decided it wasn’t worth traveling to Ramstein and Landstuhl to visit the severely wounded troops because they couldn’t bring the campaign and get the photo ops they wanted.  Instead, Obama went shopping in Berlin.

As I wrote yesterday, that’s certainly a revealing set of priorities for a man who wants to lead these troops as Commander in Chief.

Not doing personal messages when she signs the book was her idea.

It's quite enough to sign 10’s of thousands of books with her cool signature, much less also writing “To Scott and C-8r, nice to see you”

Although she did personalize one of the books at least.

A lady with a downs syndrome child named Jerry (the child couldn't make it to the signing) gave Palin a note telling her about her son-so Palin signed: Jerry, Sarah Palin.

From the article:

The former Republican vice presidential candidate planned to sign copies of her new memoir at a post store Monday. Army officials say Palin will not make a speech, pose for photos, or personalize notes in the books she signs.

It doesn't say the Army officials laid down those rules, but I assumed it was them. Who in heck would refuse to pose for photos or write personalized notes at a book signing?
