More Than 200,000 Animals Slaughtered at Nepal Sacrifice Festival November 24, 2009

Nov. 24: A butcher prepares to slaughter a buffalo with his knife during a mass sacrifice ceremony at Gadhimai temple in Bariyapur, Nepal. Hundreds of thousands of Hindus gathered at a temple in southern Nepal on Tuesday for a ceremony involving the slaughter of more than 200,000 animals, a festival that has drawn the ire of animal-welfare protesters.

A Nepalese minister said it was the largest sacrificial slaughter of animals in the world.

Animal rights groups and activists including the actress Brigitte Bardot have condemned the event, which takes place every five years in the Nepalese village of Bariyarpur, Sky News reported.

But Nepal's government says it will continue with the "centuries-old tradition" and will deploy armed police to keep the peace, Sky News reported.

Protests have occurred in recent weeks in towns near the Gadhimai temple and in the capital Katmandu by animals rights activists and other religious groups. However, Hindu organizers refused to halt the slaughter saying it was a centuries-old tradition.

Excerpts:

“People have deep faith in the goddess and they believe that sacrificing animals will bring them good luck and prosperity for their families,” said Mangal Chaudhary Tharu, a priest at the Gadhimai temple, according to Sky News.

...

More than 200,000 buffaloes, goats, chickens and pigeons will be killed Tuesday and Wednesday at the temple in the jungles of Bara district, about 100 miles south of Katmandu, to honor the Hindu goddess Gadhimai.

“Thousands of terrified buffaloes will have their heads cut off by drunken devotees,” said Bardot, according to Sky News.

...

HOW BARBARIC!

"Animal rights activists" vs. the "indigenous pipples!" Wish I knew how to post that popcorn icon!

I notice that here in the States the Grand Alliance of the Oppressed still contains nary a hint of disharmony, however.

The slaughtered animals are taken back by devotees to their villages and eaten during a feast. The meat is considered blessed and consuming it protects them from evil.

Are you saying Bardot is pro-abortion? (Or, the euphemism they use, pro-choice.)

Do they eat them?

From the article:

The slaughtered animals are taken back by devotees to their villages and eaten during a feast.

So basically they kill a bunch of animals and eat them during this religious holiday which occurs every five years. Personally, the notion of animal sacrifice in religion seems repugnant to me - but killing and eating livestock isn't much of a story.

Forgive me for pointing out this contradiction to you. Your tagline presumes your belief in God, my presumption is the Judeo-Christian deity. If so, then you would have to recognize that the Jews sacrificed animals at the Temple, in far greater numbers.

While it may shock the sensibilities, it is not out of the norm for a defined religion. We Christians recognize Christ as the ultimate sacrifice (Paschal Lamb) and no longer need to sacrifice an animal for the remision of our sin. Once the Jewish Temple is restored in Jerusalem, animal sacrifice will be reinstated.

The remnant of the Samartians in Israel still perform animal sacrifice rituals.

Please forgive my ignorance here, but . . .

I thought Hindus believe that their gods inhabit animals and that they consider them diety, and that’s why they don’t eat them, even to the point of losing harvested grain to rats.

If Hindus worship cows, how do they justify animal sacrifice?

Seems to be a disconnect here, and more than a little hypocrisy.

Or maybe it’s just that I don’t understand.

Quite true, but they were never allowed on the Temple grounds...
